It's hard to succinctly describe Lou's early albums after the break-up of the Velvet Underground, because none of them sound like any other. His style just jumped all over the place, as his restlessness wrestled with his ambition. You'll also find a tremendous amount of variance between reviews of any of these discs. Personally, I've always loved the first 2, admired the 3rd, treated the 4th like a guilty pleasure, and given enough time warmed up to the 5th.
My biggest concern in buying this set was in regards to whether the 1st album was sonically superior to the original disc I already owned. Yeah, it is. (All these "Original" boxes contain the most recent general releases, and it was easy to discover that the other 4 discs have all been remastered.)
I might add that I'm also quite pleased with the 2nd Lou Reed Box that is similarly offered.
