5.0 out of 5 stars The ever amazing Soft Machine December 15, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Since I was wee bit of a boy collecting music, I have always looked for music that challenged my senses in one form or another. My search out weighs my funds often times, therefore the choice to purchase The Original Album Classics was one of my best finds. The collection finds the band at a time where the original incarnation is evolving and transforming into a free for all rock fusion, progressive, jazz influenced monster. I find the collection intoxicating and mind numbing when played a high volumes (over loud speakers, not ear buds). The band started out as a psychedelic outfit sharing bills with Pink Floyd and Tangerine Dream and the like while transforming in similar fashion from strange psychedelic pop into heavy duty progressive music which taps into the brain. If you like jam bands or improvisational rock/jazz fusion like Miles Davis (68- - 72') or the Mahavishnu Orchestra this collection will knock your socks off. I have listened to these recordings over and over and over for the past two months. Stunning and completely enjoyable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Define Soft Machine in 100 words. May 6, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Defining the sound of Soft Machine in 100 words is impossible. This needs a PhD dissertation paper to complete the degree program. Each album alone from Third to Seven is a course each semester. The transition of instrumentation and structure changes as one of the original members leaves the band (e.g. Wyatt to Ratledge) and it gets more sophisticated. The Hugh Hopper and Elton Dean tandem remain uncontested supported by John Marshall's complex drumming. Ratledge's style is distinct and no one can match his trademark sound and skills. I already have these cds and bought this box set to compare but surprisingly regardless of remastering or recording it's the performance that abounds. The post Third line up from Softs led by Karl Jenkins is another gem, all professional and schooled musicianship, a type of music only them can identify.

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't Know How this Group got by Me July 2, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
If you like National Health or Hatfield in the North, you'll probably like the Soft Machine. Great musicianship, some cool ideas (compositionally and rhythmically) and excellent improvisation. The earlier material is more experimental/avante garde, while the later material is more jazz-fusion oriented. To me, this is like finding hidden treasure.

Well, just a wonderful group of albums that blends parts of early Weather Report and the"Careful with that Axe, Eugene" PinkFloyd era into some great, creative music. My observation is Soft Machine is what Pink Floyd might have become had they not hit gold with"Dark Side of the Moon". Commercial success at times dulls the musical creative edge or at least redirects it. However, if you prefer your progressive rock sans vocals with tangents into jazz then this is for you. Not always melodic yet the forays into dissonance are obviously a logical part of the music structure. This is late night, reflective music, not a three in the afternoon pick me up. If you like early Pink Floyd instrumentals or appreciate the early to mid 60's music of Coltrane or Miles then go for it.
