The Stanley Clarke Trio performs in the studio and talks about collaboration

Biography

Bassist Stanley Clarke was barely out of his teens when he exploded into the jazz world in 1971. Fresh out of the Philadelphia Academy of Music, he arrived in New York City and immediately landed jobs with famous bandleaders such as Horace Silver, Art Blakey, Dexter Gordon, Joe Henderson, Pharaoh Saunders, Gil Evans, Stan Getz and a budding young pianist-composer named Chick Corea.

Editorial Reviews

2007 five CD set, a great installment in Sony/BMG's Original Album Classics series that brings together rare and out of print titles with some best sellers from the Sony/BMG Jazz catalog. Many of these albums have been unavailable on CD for some time and are sought after by collectors. Each set is presented in a high quality, rigid cardboard slipcase containing five 'vinyl replica' mini LP sleeves. This collection from the Jazz bassist includes the albums Stanley Clarke, Journey To Love, School Days, Modern Man and The Clarke-Duke Project.

This collection is part of a series of popular rock and jazz artists who have five albums packaged. Each CD comes in a mini-LP sleeve and - from what I can gather - is a replica of the original, so the original errors in any notes are not corrected. I guess that's a bonus for those who enjoy reading agate type...and then complaining about mistakes.

The no frills series is a winner with Stanley Clarke, as the albums - Stanley Clarke (1974), Journey to Love (1975), School Days (1976), Modern Man (1978), Clarke-Duke Project (1981) - captures him at the start of his incredible recording career and as he quickly was taking his music from jazz/fusion into rock. School Days perhaps best captures the direction, which was more accepted by rock fans who were diving into the - by then - jazz/rock sound that was gaining a foothold on FM radio when it was initially released.

Those looking for bulky booklets and fancy packaging will be disappointed. But these collections (that are mostly quite moderately priced) truly let the music do the talking.

This set of CDs is a great bargain. School Days was always a favorite, I think it sounds fine on CD. Buying this on Amazon I think I spent about $12.00 or less for 5 CDs including shipping. What a deal!! I really don't know how people can complain about these multi-album sets. I suspect these sets are going to become scarce, and people will be sorry they didn't buy them when they could. I've bought about 5 of them and been totally satisfied.

Stanley Clarke is one of the greatest bassists ever.
The first 3 discs on this collection are 100% stellar representations of jazz/rock fusion rivaling that of Mahavishnu Orchestra , Weather Report . Jeff Beck's work from this period , and other fusion classics.
The other writers are right. This set is no frills. But it is all thrills as far as the music is concerned !
RIP George Duke.

This set contains some of the best albums of his career. School Days is considered by many to be his best. His self title debut album and Journey to Love have always been two of my favorites. Modern Man and the first Clark Duke project are must have CD's too. The sound quality of the disc is very good. It sounds as good as my vinyl records did in the 70's. How anyone could have complaints about this set is beyond me. Truly 5 of the best albums from his career in mini lp jackets in a nice little box for a $15.00 price tag. That is $3.00 per record what a deal. I would highly recommend you pick up this set and enjoy the magic that is Stanley Clarke.
