The master tapes used for Rio Grande Mud, Tres Hombres, Fandango! and Deguello are from the "The ZZ Top Six Pack" 1987 remix/remaster/disaster. Eliminator hasn't been remastered.

I know a lot fans have issues with the Six Pack remix/remasters because of the 'drum in the garbage can sound'.

I would 100% recommend The Best Of ZZ Top none of the tracks have been remixed or remastered. ;)

If you are looking for remastered versions this is NOT what your looking for. The only great remasters are still Tres Hombres and Fandango reissues w bonus tracks. You can find original mix remasters in the Chrome,Smoke, and BBQ box set(must buy) but obviously it doesnt have it all.

I can't believe I got sucked in again by Rhino Records, and I can't believe that Billy Gibbons, Dusty Hill, Frank Beard and Bill Ham don't care that there still aren't CDs available for ZZ Top's First Album, Rio Grande Mud, Tejas and El Loco which sound anywhere near as good as the original vinyl LPs. Anyone who listens to the original albums and compares them to the remastered, remixed, re-recorded discs on the ZZ Top six-pack, must realize that the best and purest-sounding ZZ Top music has been lost. That is why the problem has been corrected for the expanded Tres Hombres and Fandango CDs. I bought those two corrected discs, then shelled out again for this box set even though I already bought Tres Hombres and Fandango, thinking that Original Album Series meant that the Rio Grande Mud would be the original album mix. But, NO! There's nothing new here, just the same old tinny-sounding late-80's remixed debacles. Rhino even had the audacity to include the older versions of Tres Hombres and Fandango, instead of the already-released corrected versions. Rhino just re-packaged the same old garbage in fancier sleeves, without caring about the inferior quality of the music, because they just care about minimizing costs and maximizing profits. For those of us who were around in the early 1970's and loved ZZ Top even before La Grange, because they were a great blues band in their early days, it's totally unbelievable that the only way to enjoy that great music is to haul out the old albums and crank up the turntable. If you don't believe what I'm saying, take a look at how much you'd have to pay on Amazon for even a used copy of the Chrome Smoke & BBQ: The ZZ Top Box (which contained songs in the original mixes).
Bottom line, don't buy this Original Album Series boxset, unless you've never heard the original albums.

Texas-based southern rock/blues trio ZZ Top has become a respected force in the modern music scene, and deservedly so. This collection is a relatively well-selected choice of 5 of their best-remembered albums, spanning a career that gradually lifted them to commercial success. They have a good musical sense and feel for the blues. They can be serious and also have a sense of humor, flaunting a party-animal side that you have to love......for instance, it's no secret that the band took their name from their 2 favorite brands of cigarette rolling papers (even though they didn't claim to be rolling tobacco). Songs of drinking and hookers etc. blend well with their more serious side. Guitarist Billy Gibbons is a talented frontman, while bassist Dusty Hill and drummer Frank Beard add admirably to the mix. This collection begins with their second album from the early '70s, Rio Grande Mud, which brought them radio play with Just Got Paid, a great example of the bluesy tone of this disc.....although that tune probably got more popular after their third album, Tres Hombres gave us the big hit La Grange (about a Texas cathouse), blues medley "Waiting for the Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago and the rockin' Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers. Their fourth album Fandango was not nearly as impressive overall, but it brought us the huge hit, Tush. One live side combined with a side of short, quick tunes made the album seem rushed and uninspired, but it did have great moments, such as Blue Jean Blues.Read more ›

Yeah, I'm a sucker for 2-in-ones and more. And some of these "original album series" boxes are cool. But this one is not worth buying if you are looking to save space and replace the 5 individual cds you probably already have in your collection. To start off, it features 3 albums that are the remastered versions, but don't have the bonus tracks you get when you buy them separately. That leaves Deguello, which is the same as the stand alone cd, and then Rio Grande Mud, with the infamous 80's electro-drums. The idea is nice, especially if you remember the original album packaging (hence the name of the series, I guess), but unnecessary and inadequate in this case.

I did my homework and own the Tres and Fandango w/bonus. The rest of this is a real horror. Even if you don't much care for ZZ Top, you have to read what is going on with their material to believe this could possibly be true. What is on this band's mind?
