Editorial Reviews

In a studio, far, far away in a place of mountains, snow and northern lights there exists a workout like no other... and it is known throughout the land as Buns of Steel! This incredible lower body program was created by Anchorage Alaska Hip Hop Aerobics Club owner / instructor Greg Smithey, as an alternative to traditional aerobics programs. It's a typical night at the Hip Hop. The parking lot is full. A sign hangs on the door to the studio..."Sorry class is full." Inside, around a hundred men and women, young and old, eagerly await the enterance of Dr. Buns, Professor of Bunology, Prince of Pain and Master of Masochism. In a few moments the wait is over and the fun begins...the Bunmaster appears...a cassette tape in one hand and a long leather whip in the other (it's only a prop!). After a few minutes the class is aroused from their sitting positions as a few instructions and appropriate warnings are given to first time visitors. It takes only a few moments before the entire class is up and roaring with enthusiasm, hands clapping, and bodies pulsing to the excellent upbeat music from the four large speakers overhead... The warmup has begun and soon everyone will be back on the studio floor feasting on a menu of lower leg, hip, thigh, and bun exercises delightfully prepared and enthusiastically served. The studio lights are dimmed, the stage is lit and for the next 50 minutes the Bunmaster goes to work...encouraging and motivating everyone through each of over 50 seperate exercises designed to sculpt and strengthen the lower legs, hips, thighs and buns into submission. Throughout the studio the Bunmaster's voice can be heard... "beautiful legs...beautiful legs...work those beautiful legs....and don't forget to squeeze those cheeseburgers out of those thighs and that carrot cake...and those french fries!" When it's over, everyone, without a doubt knows what it's like to experience the incredible Original Buns of Steel workout!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple, effective, timeless, September 26, 2000

This is the best video I've ever used. The moves are easy to follow, but they certainly don't feel easy. If you want a simple but effective workout, look no further than the original Buns of Steel. Yes, it was made in 1987 and the clothes are terrible. Who cares? This doesn't affect your workout, and in my opinion it adds to the fun! Others have complained about the music, but the beats really help you keep up the pace. Greg Smithey is a wonderful instructor -- he explains the moves well and adds a touch of humor. If you want fast results, buy this video and do it a few times a week. Don't feel discouraged if you can't do all of the reps right away. Just do what you can and it will get easier.

5.0 out of 5 stars For a great workout that makes you beg for mercy, buy this!!, January 2, 2003

I have tried more than a few of the "Buns/abs/arms of Steel" series, and I can say that hands down this one (the original, produced in '87) is still the absolute best. Forget about the "advanced/intermediate/etc." versions of the Buns series - this one gets you motivated and more importantly, gets you tight in ALL THE RIGHT places. The guy who leads the workout, Greg Smithey, was once an Olympian pole-vaulter and the exercises he uses on this tape were part of his training workout. I PROMISE YOU - YOU WILL FEEL IT!

I still use the tape regularly after a year and still get a pure kick out of the workout, Smithey's mannerisms, and the class's reactions. Granted, you have to be able to get past the 80's pastel leggings, retro film set, and headbands that the studio class and Smithey wear, but that's all part of this workout's charm - you get a kick-butt workout AND more than a few laughs at the same time. A totally (unintentionally) campy workout video! Moreover, IT WORKS. After using this tape (and this tape ALONE) religiously for a week, I saw results. After a month, I had lost noticeable inches. After 3 months - I was addicted and couldn't wait to come home from work to do the workout every day. I love this tape! It truly sculpts the areas that it promises to (backside, thighs, waist) and I highly recommend that you try it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Its a really dated video, but the workout is great, January 1, 2001
This review is from: The Original Buns of Steel [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This workout was done way back in 1987 and it looks like it. The music is really bad and the clothing is even worse. I think that there was a guy with jheri curls in there! Anyway, even though the video is dated, the workout is excellent. Beginners probably will have a hard time completing the video, but it gets a bit easier when you do it on a consistent basis. I could not even lift my legs the first time that I did this workout. Nowadays, the workout is still very intense, but it is not as intense as the first time that I did it.
