2.0 out of 5 stars Where's the Quality
This product has no heft to it. Why? The handle is hollow and seemingly made of cheap plastic. There are a myriad of other materials that would have made this a better life-saving tool. It is much too expensive for the cheap materials used.

A few months after purchasing them I used mine at the scene of an auto accident when the driver and passenger were trapped and couldn't unlock the doors. I was able to break the back window EASILY and unlock the door. You literally just need to tap the glass and it shatters.

I am now ordering the 2 pack to give as Christmas gifts with hopes that they are never needed.

5.0 out of 5 stars I hope never to use it, but I am SO glad I have it, January 4, 2010

This item gives such peace of mind! I think every car should be equipped with one. The Life Hammer has a tool to break auto glass, and near the base of the handle is a tool to cut seat belts. It is supposed to be mounted within reach of the driver, and that is my one small complaint - the shape of the hammer's container makes it hard to mount as the directions suggest. I have mine in my glovebox, which is still easily accessible and gets rid of the mounting issue. Apart from that, it's a very well designed tool and I'm thankful someone came up with it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Better To Have And Not Need - Highly Recommended!, December 10, 2010

We bought three of these LifeHammer "Emergency Hammers" after watching the "Mythbusters" episodes on escaping from a sinking car. We live in the mountains with a lot winding roads, often with water at the bottom, and these Hammers seem like a worthwhile and prudent precaution. Here are my observations:

+ Colorful; bright orange makes it easy to see
+ Very Pointy; both hammer ends are very pointy and I don't doubt at all that they could break a car side window
+ Sharp Seatbelt Cutter; well protected so you can't get your fingers in it, tested with a ribbon and it cut easily
+ Plastic Holder; works surprisingly well to cover the pointy bits and is east to remove quickly

As my title says, it is better to have and not need than to need and not have.

Highly Recommended! Here is the single on we also bought LifeHammer Orange Original Emergency Hammer

This is one Item I hope never gets use. The designers really thought this out. I bought one for my teen daughters car. I have always worried of the remote possibility she would have the unfortunate luck of driving into a river, off a bridge or get into an accident where she rolled the car and couldn't get out the door or is pinned by the seat belt while the care is starts to burn. How bad would I feel if she was trapped inside and didn't have any tool to get out. It is just one of those worry's a parent deals with so why not spend a few bucks to at least give a loved one a chance?...I think it's worth the 1 in a million chance...

Hope I never have to use and I live in the desert, but even here we have canals that people have accidentally driven into and drowned plus flash floods that too many people do not know how to deal with.

One quibble, they come with hard plastic holders that I assume are to be attached to something. But it is very hard to remove the Life Hammer from the hard plastic and in my vehicle there isn't a good place near the driver to attach the things. And just putting them in the console or glove box can leave them hard to find or covered with other stuff.

Seems to me it would have been much better and more useful to have Velcro as the attachment. A pieced of Velcro could be glued to the side of the console and a strip of Velcro on the Life Hammer would have put it in close proximity to the driver and easy to grab in an emergency.

Still I highly recommend that everyone get one. Highly recommend watching the Mythbusters episode so you will know why and how to survive an emergency that we all hope never occurs.

Okay, so I am lucky enough to not have had to use this item yet, but it seems like it would work well. I bought one for my mom and myself because we originally had these little keychain ones that would hardly do the job necessary as well as the alarm on them kept going off at random times (like the movie theatre or church!).

It has a way to mount it which would be cool, except I'm not sure I would mount it anyplace in my honda...

I like it though and so did my mom.

Excelllent. Saw this on Dr. Oz. May need this in an emergency. Hopefully will never need this for emergency, but may never know. Thanks again.

After reading the reviews I am definitely purchasing this.
I wonder if they ever thought of putting a light on this? That may be handy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insurance, December 25, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Original Life Hammer Escape Hammer (Orange), 2 Pack
Like Life Insurance, nobody ever hopes they have to use a Life Hammer. The two Mythbuster episodes about a car going into a lake were enough to make me purchase one of these for each of my cars. The most recent episode showed what happens when a car flips over in a lake (apparently a fairly common scenario). They showed that it is virtually impossible to escape the flipped car with no tools. Therefore, I purchased the Life Hammer.

We do not regularly pass by a body of water that could require the use of this device, but I'd much rather have this inexpensive insurance than not.

This is a standard design. The hammers are about six inches long and a fluorescent red. There is a glow in the dark dot that I hope I never have to see in dark water because I'm not certain that dot would help much. One end is a metal tool to shatter a window, and the other end is a protected blade used to cut a seatbelt.

The real issue with these is how to mount them in your car so they are easy to get at, but out of the way enough that they aren't an eyesore. No mounting material is supplied with these. The small instruction sheet recommends using two Velcro pads. For the non-mechanically inclined, this is a good idea. For the more mechanically inclined, screwing down the black base is a better way to go. As the directions warned, be sure to check behind the panel before you drill.

Someday it would be interesting to break a car window just to see how these work. I understand that they take very little force to do their job. Glad I purchased this little bit of insurance.

5.0 out of 5 stars for peace of mind, December 1, 2010

I got this back in 2007. At the time, I had a 2 year old boy and twin newborns. Today I have a 5 yr old, 3 yr old twins and 7 month old baby. I am always in my van with 1 or all of the children. If I were in an accident where I am stuck with my seatbelt, with the children with me, I wouldn't know what to do. Of course I'd panic. But with this, hopefully, I wouldn't have that panic state if we get into an emergency where the seatbelt would get stuck.

I bought a industrial grade velcro and stuck this on the lower left under the steering wheel where I could still reach it if my seatbelt locks up no slack.

Also, with our convertible seat, it takes effort to press the button to free up the 5 point harness. If it comes to emergency, I would to be able to cut off the seatbelt to get my child out. Having the Life Hammer would allow me to do that.
