An excellent resource for Medieval Researchers,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Original Mediterranean Cuisine: Medieval Recipes for Today (Paperback)
This is a very valuable guide for anyone interested in preparing a medieval Mediterranian feast. The author includes the original text from the original document, an English translation (for those of us who don't read Old Italian), and her own personal redaction and interpertation of the recipe. It gives the reader an excellent opportunity to try her recipes or to experiment with their own version of the recipe, while still being authentic. Many problems with other books on the subject include modern substitutions (such as ketchup and Worchestershire sauce) for many Medieval spices. The recipes are well written and easy to follow. (And very tasty, too!) I would highly recommend this for anyone in the Society for Creative Anachronism who is looking for something different than recipes derived from "Currye on Englyshe" or anyone else who belives they were born 600 years too late.

A 'must have' for medieval recreationists,

This is a great book for beginners and veterans alike. Through text and recipe, Ms. Santich dispells many of the myths regarding medieval cookery that have somehow become 'gospel'. The recipes range from very easy to slightly challenging and cover enough ground that a sizable feast can be presented based on this book alone. I hope that it gets a reprint soon, this book would make an excellent gift as well as a great addition to an already established cookbook library.

This is a different slant on the medieval recipes you get in most these styles of books. The recipes are very tasty and have a real ethnic flavour along with the medieval tastes. The info B. Santich gives about certain things throughout the book make it a fun read even when you're out of the kitchen. I definetly recommend the "Chicken with Verjuice" as it's delish.

I have enjoyed this book as it is broken down into many different sections for each type of food. The recipes are easy to read, and the instructions are very clear. If you are looking for cookbooks from a historical perspective I found this book lacking in the textual references that books from Scully would have. I did find the variety of recipes to be more than you could ask for. I have tried a couple of the recipes, and they do taste well. I would recommend this book to anyone looking to grow their collection of Midieval Style recipes.
