This review is from: Original Sextet (Audio CD)
Aside from a few Berkshire Record Outlet purchases, I have generally shied away from the Spanish Gambit and Lone Hill Jazz labels. For one I question the copyright authenticity of these discs (a sentiment echoed by the comments of others in the Amazon community, most notably the widow of pianist George Russell), and the frequent lack of original liner notes, cover art and recording specifics only fuels my speculation. However, recently I came across a few of these import titles in the Marketplace that interested me, and as the price was right, I ordered them. The Complete Studio Master Takes of the Original Gerry Mulligan Sextet is a 2CD set that (to the best of my knowledge) collects three old EmArcy/Mercury LPs -- "Presenting," "A Profile" and "Mainstream of Jazz" -- along with eight additional bonus tracks, all made between September 1955 & '56. The players include Bob Brookmeyer, Zoot Sims, Jon Eardley, Don Ferrera, Peck Morrison, Bill Crow and Dave Bailey. The sound quality is excellent and considering these albums are not currently available from the Verve/UNI label domestically, interested Jeru fans should get this reissue.
