3.0 out of 5 stars Well titled debut.
For all the Vermonters out there, I recently checked-out this album from the Jericho-Underhill library. I say that because I doubt any level of fan wants to buy this for the outrageous going used price of 200+. That's right people, don't forget your local libraries.

Musically I enjoyed Original Soul. It's far from the rock n roll of the self-titled album. A lot...

4.0 out of 5 stars Another piece of the journey, May 30, 2009
This review is from: Original Soul (Audio CD)
I first discovered Grace Potter and her band the Nocturnals 2 years ago when they were opening up for Gov't Mule in Philadelphia PA. I remember thinking "what a name for a band". While I was not completely blown away, I was impressed with the band as a whole and Grace Potters voice and keyboard skills in particular. When she came up to sing "Take Me To The River" with Gov't Mule I realized what a seasoned performer she really is.

A later headlining show cemented their growing presence in my CD collection.

This is the third disc I have purchased by Grace Potter. Ironically I purchased them in reverse order of release. Which is ok and a cool way to discover a band. This CD features the drummer and guitarist from the Nocturnals with a different bass player, a guest keyboardist on organ and 2 different female backing vocalists. Grace Potter handles piano, Fender Rhoads and lead vocals. She had not branched out into the guitar yet, and the now signature Hammond B3 stylings are handled by another, but she clearly had her musical identity in place. While the album features the blues and jazz influence the Nocturnals have used as a solid foundation, the more overt rock and pop influences have not crept into the bands sound here.

This album is a keeper and well worth the price. The tunes are all solid, with a few I would like to hear the Nocturnals include in their live setlist. It also gives a look into Grace Potters early efforts and allows one to better see the evolution of her and her band. Very Cool.

5.0 out of 5 stars BUY THIS AT ANY PRICE!!, January 24, 2008
This review is from: Original Soul (Audio CD)
Friend, if you are the slightlest Grace Potter fan, this will blow you away. Fabulous supporting musicians and vocals. I love the brilliantly written lyrics and music is so full of cool hooks. And Grace has the B3 WAILING on this record. Yes friend, more B3 than the later 2 albums. Really sweet songs, love them all. My favorite(wearing out my track select button)is "Crazy Parade". The price on this CD seems to be volatile with demand so just buy it even if it seems pricey. The radio stations have not yet discovered this treasure trove of fabulous music so play it loud and often

5.0 out of 5 stars First effort from Grace Potter? You wouldn't know it., July 29, 2007
This review is from: Original Soul (Audio CD)
Grace Potter's first album, "Original Soul" is exactly what the title describes. Sultry soulful sounds, and you wouldn't know from listening that this was the groups first effort. With its routes a bit more in soul than rock, like their follow up Nothing but the Water, fans of the more moderns sound will be blown away by the first album. Tracks like "Go Down Low" capture Grace's sexy soulful voice, while tunes like "Crazy Parade" and "Gumbo Moon" hint towards the more current sound. Regardless, this is a must have for anyone who loves raw emotion in their music and any Grace Potter fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still relevant, April 3, 2010

After hearing bits & pieces of songs on our local public radio station, we happened on her public television special. Soon after, we saw her & the Nocturals live and that was it. Original Soul is the third Grace CD we purchased. The whole CD flows very well and it was interesting to hear Grace with back-up singers. Her songwriting ability is unbelievable; such maturity for someone so young. This is definitely worth owning. Can't wait for the new CD in June!

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Brilliant, July 26, 2010

Grace Potter is one of those artists I found quite by accident while surfing Amazon for something new. Like another reviewer here, I also bought all three Grace Potter and the Nocturnals CDs in reverse order and found that each one got better. Although that's really not fair as I haven't spent enough time to fairly judge the latest two as I got completely hooked on the CD Nothing But The Water.

Looking for more Grace Potter I then found this CD, Original Soul. The Nocturnals name is not attached but both Scott Tournet-guitar and Matt Burr-drums are here as on all four Grace Potter CDs.

All I can say is "BUY THIS CD". It's pricey, probably due to demand and a limited printing, but it's well worth whatever you end up paying. I haven't taken it out of my player since opening it days ago. It's an amazing mix of Blues, Soul, Gospel and good old Rock & Roll. Seems to be more of the B-3 on this CD (although Nothing But The Water has it's share) which I really like, but this one also has more background vocals which give it a fuller sound.

This is a lot like the music I grew up with in the early 70's but more timeless. I really think this is one of those CDs that I'll still be listening to years from now. Not a single bad song in the 13 track bunch.

Grace Potter has a powerful voice that can go from smooth and beautiful to raw, raspy and full of soul. She draws a lot of comparisons to Norah Jones and Bonnie Raitt, which is impressive company, but she's a true original. She also plays a mean piano and B-3, and the combination is outstanding. Look no further, this is the real deal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Most Excellent Record, Buy it, August 31, 2007

This record is a classic. The first record from GP and the Nocturnals, it is a very revealing compendium. It shows the true to the roots soul and blues of Grace and the band. My favorite cut is "Crazy Parade". I just keep playing it over and over. I have listened to this CD perhaps 20 times now, and I here "new" tweaks and touches every time I hear it. All cuts are great, nothing to skip over on this CD, unlike so many other bands out there. Worth whatever the cost, I have bought 2 in case I lose the first.

4.0 out of 5 stars Orignal Soul. The tilte says it all!, January 10, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Original Soul (Audio CD)
Orignal Soul is Grace Potters first album and a very worthy one. I first discoverd Grace with her most current self titled album GP&N. It is a great classic rock album! However Orginal Soul is very heart felt soul music with an occansional hint of blues. All the songs are very well written, ( she is a great lyricist ) and recorded with a clean and smooth sound. My favorite tracks are in this order: 1. Hidden Superstion, 2. Gumbo Moon, 3. No Good, Mean Old, Lowdown Lover Man, 4. At your Request. If your only a classic rock fan, then you might not be into this album, but if your a hard core Potter fan then adding this album to your a collection is a must!! Note: This album is hard to find, so if you do, it might cost a lot more than the orignal retail price.

A lot more...soul. Grace already sings very well, and she gives the organ plenty of attention (sorry, had to). There was no doubt growth from album to album, but this is still very worthy of a listen, especially if you like the softer side of our favorite Vermont girl.

This is probably the last album most g.p./nocturnal fans will buy but really should be the first. It should be obvious to anyone listening to this that big times were ahead for this performer. Having seen her twice in performance at the House of Blues in Orlando in 08 and last weekend at the State theater in St. Pete, Fl, I can honestly say I have seen the growth of a rising star and her band. I hope we can enjoy her great talent for many years to come.
