4.0 out of 5 stars Like partying with dear old friends you've never met before, February 3, 2005
This review is from: The Original Sound of Sheffield: Best of 83 - 87 (Audio CD)
If you like the Virgin/Some Bizarre "caucasian funk" era of CabVol, you're intimately familiar with these songs, but almost certainly not with most of the versions presented here. And yes, they are more than different enough to be engrossing and fun even if you've heard the albums a thousand times. It's also a nice best of from this era for the uninitiated or those familiar with the material but who only feel they need the "singles" of this era. In the absence of reissues of CODE and The Covenant, The Sword, and the Arm of the Lord, this also forms a good stopgap.

This is truly a multipurpose CabVol CD, and one even a casual fan will find delightful. It deserves a 4.5, but that option is not offered. Buy it and try not to pee yourself laughing when you hear the version of Don't Argue they included...

5.0 out of 5 stars This is all that you could ask for in a compilation of their work from this period, August 17, 2009

This review is from: The Original Sound of Sheffield: Best of 83 - 87 (Audio CD)
In the years that this compilation covers, Cabaret Voltaire was a maintstay on the alternative radio station in my hometown, playing just their 12 inch mixes. So, the great thing about this compilation, is that these are the full 12 inch mixes of their songs at that time, and in my opinion, the 12 inch mixes were their best efforts. If you're looking for a collection of their 12 inch mixes on CD, this is it. I commend the record company for putting all of these terrific mixes on one compilation. Cab Voltaire were pioneers of industrial dance back in the early 80's. Their music was usually powered by a driving beat and various electrics, incorporating elements of funk, and punk. Sensoria was incredibly popular in the alternative dance scene at the time and that 12 inch was generally in high demand and hard to find back in the early 80's. A highly recommended addition for those looking for a cd copy of their old vinyl 12 inch mixes. And for those who are just getting into this genre, check this out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential collection of the Cabs' more commercial work, August 10, 2010

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Original Sound of Sheffield: Best of 83 - 87 (Audio CD)
Picking up right where '78/82' left off, this second 'Best Of' collection chronicles the important singles from the Cabs' more commercial dance-oriented period. There are still strong hints of the band's industrial roots, particularly in vocal sampling and Found Sound, and nearly every song contains some unusual effects, instrumentation, or production. But the absence of Chris Watson gave the mid 80's Cabs a much cleaner and more streamlined sound, with the dance and funk elements brought to the fore. From the funky 'James Brown' to the breathless 'I Want You', this is music designed for clubs.

Fittingly, then, nearly all the tracks here are presented in their extended 12" mixes. This is fantastic, since many of the original singles can be hard to find, the albums generally contain only the abbreviated mixes. So even those die-hards who own all the individual albums will find '83/87' essential. Add to that some non-album tracks such as 'Dream Ticket' and you have a near-perfect collection. My only question would be why the album track 'Thank You America' closes the album, when you have non-album tracks from the period such as 'Shakedown' and 'Drain Train'.

The Cabs have put out a few different hits-and-rarities collections in recent years, but this one is the real deal. Extended mixes plus all the important tracks make '83/87' essential for every Cabs fan.
