5.0 out of 5 stars Long Lost Treasure At Last March 25, 2009
Verified Purchase
Amazon has granted me the incredible opportunity to reclaim a treasured favorite lost to me for close to 40yrs. Long have I searched for this gem which to me, stands as THE Finest Collection of 'Great Motion Picture Themes', ever pressed. All these themes are from the original soundtracks, representative of some of the greatest movie music ever written and performed. Most times, movie theme collections are performed by other lesser known orchestras that just pale in comparison to the originals. It's incredible to think that these great gems are all here together in this one collection. I know I sound like an infomercial but it's all true. Ferrante & Teicher's 'Exodus' stirs to the marrow, Al Caiola's 'The Magnificent Seven' lifts you out of your chair with excitement. The beautiful, haunting theme from 'The Apartment', the stark emotional mood set by 'On The Beach', you almost envision the animal horns being blown glorifying the god Odin, as long ships sail into the narrow fiords in 'The Vikings'. Images of Gina Lollobrigida's pagan dance come to mind while listening to 'Solomon & Sheba'. The jaunty 'Some Like It Hot' theme never fails to bring a smile to your face. Another haunting theme, 'The Alamo', break out the Ouzo and dance to 'Never On Sunday', These are just a few of the great movie themes on this album. There are no clunkers here. If you are a fan of movie themes and are a product of the late 50's, early 60's, this is the one you should get. Thank you Amazon for reuniting me with an elusive record album I've loved and searched for for many years. " Welcome Home Kid."

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Motion Picture Themes United Artists June 20, 2011
This record brings a lot of joy to me, as I first experienced it upon it's initial release as a teen...
My parents belonged to a "record club"...and as such
were able to order various lp's to be sent to the house.
The record club versions usually had no paper inner sleeve, but a clear plastic one, the shape of a bowl...
It was "sealed, and you tore at the dotted line on the straight edge to get at the record...
As a music fan, it was fascinating to listen to the themes on this record, as they were diverse, but they had 2 common threads...most of them were arranged by the late, great Don Costa, and the second thing was they were all from United Artists motion pictures(of course)lol...
Another pleasurable thing was that since we owned an
early Webcor Stereo protable phonograph, most of the discs we ordered were in stereo.
The tunes and arrangements on this disc are excellent, and today years later, still sound great and exciting!
The writers that represented these themes were some of the best! Dimitri Tionkin, Elmer Bernstein, David Buttolph, etc... and coming home after school and putting this Lp on lifted my spirits very much...
Just hearing the Magnificent 7 theme and its unique fascinating rhythms got me going...and then later on in the selections, cuts such as Exodus, and the introspective "Smile" by Charlie Chaplin made me ponder
my emotions...what a lovely arrangement by Don Costa..
Hey, 50 some odd years later, this recording still does it for me, and I'm glad Amazon has it for sale! Not all of the cuts were directly from the soundtrack, but actually, they were done much better than the originals, with a couple of exceptions...
Pick this up if you like dynamic orchestral music!
