Voltron: Defender of the Universe, is a classic from the 1980's. Having recently seen it again, I can see why it was popular.

To summarize, a team of space explorers answers a distress call from Planet Arus, a member world of the Galaxy Alliance. They are captured by the Fleet of Doom, and broguht to Castle Doom. They escape, and return to Arus, where they find the Castle of Lions.

There is one plot hole. The enemy soldiers are described as robots, though it is clear they are living people.
