One of the Finest Books on Fly Fishing You Will Ever Read..., July 29, 2005
This review is from: The Origins of Angling (Hardcover)
This book is something of a life-work by John McDonald. It is a beautiful study of Dame Juliana Berner's manuscript that dates back to the Middle Ages. It contains facimile of the manuscript, as well as translation, and notes.
If you have not read this book, you must, or you will have missed out on one of the great works of sporting literature. I have also tied some of the flies she describes but as of yet, I have been unable to use any of them. I love seeing the "yellow leaper" in my fly box and simply cannot bring myself to use it.
Thank you Juliana Berners, and thank you, John McDonald for bringing to us, such wonderful and thoughtful insight to the mystery of the sport of fly fishing.
