Callan tries to explain how the first followers of Jesus became believers. Central to this development was the identification of Jesus as the Christ or Anointed One, an idea Callan traces to Jesus' being crucified as a false Christ and then being vindicated when he was raised from the dead by God. Jesus was expected to come again to complete the work of Christ. Christians subsequently developed a belief in the doctrine of the Trinity, and Callan wonders whether anyone could be Christian without that belief. Recommended for all libraries.
