This review is from: The Origins of Halloween: A Brief History of Samhain, All Hallows Eve and Our Current Spooky Celebration (Kindle Edition)
This is an entertaining essay (about 3,400 words) about the origins of Halloween. Its roots lie in the ancient Celtic harvest celebration of Samhain, which was essentially absorbed by the Christian festivals of All Saints Day and All Souls Day and transformed into "All Hallows Eve," the night preceding those holiday. Along the way, Halloween picked up some intriguing medieval customs from Ireland and England, and then was taken to America in the 19th century, mostly by Irish immigrants. There it went through further changes, becoming both a "mischief night" and a time for parlor games and trick and treating, ultimately becoming the curious hybrid it is today. While Halloween is now overly commercialized and in danger of becoming just an excuse for costume parties and spooky decorations, it still retains some of the mystery and elements of its pagan and early Christian past.
