Book Description

April 1, 1998
This book, originally published in 1984, contains Barry Long's extraordinary vision of the structure of existence, evolution and the human mind. It is impossible to adequately describe the scope and range of its subject matter because it encompasses everything we are able to perceive and much that we can only know by spiritual insight. It describes how the human mind works. It contains prophecy - some of which has now come true, in events like 9/11 and recent scientific discoveries. It contains explanations for UFO's and other phenomena. It explains evolution in a way that resolves the more recent debates about Intelligent Design. It provides the perspective for understanding the Big Bang. It is not science. It is not religion. It is what Barry Long called 'the myth that came to life.

Editorial Reviews

About the Author

Barry Long's intention as a spiritual master was to offer a new understanding of the connection between the visible and invisible worlds, the inner and the outer experience of life. He was always concerned with the individual, but as a player in the bigger picture and agent of cosmic consciousness. This led him to investigate the nature of the universe and to provide explanations for existence and the purpose of life. In 1984 his findings were published by Routledge, Kegan Paul in 'The Origins of Man and the Universe'.

More About the Author

Barry Long (1926-2003) was a writer and spiritual teacher with an original and challenging way of communicating age-old truths.

Born and raised in Australia he started out as a junior journalist and became the youngest-ever editor of a Sydney Sunday tabloid, somewhat prophetically called 'Truth'. At that time spiritual truth was far from his mind, but in his early 30s, the ambitious and successful family man began to question all his values. For some years his inner pain and suffering increased. Eventually, in 1965, he fled Australia and went to India. After many adventures, alone in the Himalayas he experienced what he called a 'mystic death', or the realization of immortality. This was the real beginning of his journey towards 'the unfathomable mystery of God or Life and that other divine mystery of true love between man and woman'.

He wrote of his insights and realizations and for thirty years gave talks and seminars in many countries. He inspired and guided many thousands of men and women without wanting to create a big organization or attract personal fame. He was concerned with the individual, not society. He taught that the way to truth and the reality of love is through direct experience, not belief or imagination; and that freedom comes from taking responsibility for one's own life. He was fulfilled by the prospect that one day someone might hear the truth from him and be able to live it. Evidently very many did. His legacy may be seen in their lives and in the work of some of those he inspired, including other teachers, notably Eckhart Tolle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read it - don't think about it, October 13, 2003

This review is from: The Origins of Man and the Universe: The Myth That Came to Life (Paperback)
The only way to comprehend this book is to accept it as a myth, like you would perhaps read the story of Atlantis. It will take much time to absorb what is said, so read with patience and in small doses if it overwhelms you. The book presents the myth of the origins on the universe and mankind, and is the cornerstone of Barry Long's mystical teachings. Barry takes us on a journey through the mist of time (and before time) deep into our own consciousness, and gives us a glimpse into the mind of God. Having read piles and piles of books on theoretical physics, psychology, religion, spirituality and philosophy, I was surprised at how remarkable and refreshing the book was in its view of the human condition. Recommended for everyone to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Cosmic Myth, August 1, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Origins of Man and the Universe: The Myth That Came to Life (Paperback)
Whether or not I "liked" this book is irrelevant! The fact is that it is helping to awaken me from the self-ish ignorance of my mind, our society, our culture, and our evolutionary history. Having already read it several times through, with a still mind, it has en-lightened several spirit-ual Ideas in my consciousness. This work is nothing less than the mythic revelation of the cosmos in contemporary scientific language. It is the timeless LOGOS in the language of our times; A psycho-spiritual Master-piece; The Word of God written through man the master.

Mr. Long's words guide the still mind and present consciousness on an inward mytho-scientific journey through the habitual ignorance of the selfish psyche back to its divine origins. I have not yet completed this journey and will continue to read it until I do, but I have realized the Idea of what Mr. Long is doing. From this place of love and truth I commend this book to you. You may not "like" it, but if you are ready it will help to enlighten your consciousness and reveal some original truth to you.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Modern Spiritual Masterpiece, January 8, 2005

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Origins of Man and the Universe: The Myth That Came to Life (Paperback)
In what is, for me, the most profound book ever written, Barry Long tackles the question of our origins from the vantage point of the spiritual master and has produced what many regard as this influential spiritual teacher's finest work.

After quickly dispatching scientifc speculation and religious exegis as failed attempts at explaining our origins, Barry turns to traverse ground sign posted by the creation myths of many cultures before he shifts into gear and takes the reader on a journey through creation and beyond the universe.

With a sure hand, Barry leads the reader in stillness and nothingness deep within the layers of mind or the unconscious. There, the reality of external space or the sense perceived world and the present purpose of life on earth are encountered in all their transcendent beauty and magnificence.

Compelling and energetically powerful, any attempt to summarise this book is hopeless, conceptualising and destroying. This is a life-changing book.
