Editorial Reviews

I, Origins is the sci-fi film by writer/director Mike Cahill (Another Earth) which tells the story of a molecular biologist (Michael Pitt) and his laboratory partner (Brit Marling) who uncover evidence that may fundamentally change society as we know it. The film features a beautiful electronica score composed by Will Bates and Phil Mossman (who had produced the score for Another Earth) and the songs "Motion Picture Soundtrack" by Radiohead and "Dust It Off" performed by The Dø.

I recently saw "I Origins" in the theater (more on that later). As I was watching the movie, I made a mental note to myself that I should check out the soundtrack, as I quite liked the music I heard in the movie. The soundtrack is composed by Will Bates and Phil Mossman, who also scored the soundtrack of Mike Cahill's previous movie, "Another Earth".

"I Origins - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" (17 tracks; 54 min.) starts off with "Message To My Future Self", a dreamy instrumental with a vaguely menacing undercurrent. The minimalist "Dust It Off" by The Dø is one of the few songs featuring vocals on here. Then we get a long string of instrumental tracks from Bates and Mossnan. I quite like "Lucky Elevens", another dreamy song that plays particularly well with the movie's narrative at that point. "Turning Over Rocks" is a piano-based tune with abstract elements interwoven with it. Later on, as the movie shifts to India, the movie shifts as well, check out "India", which juxtaposes electronic music with Indian musical influences. Towards the end, we get Radiohead's "Motion Picture Soundtrack", originally from their Kid A album and one of my favorite tracks from it. It plays beautifully over the closing scenes of the movie.Radiohead also contributes "Life in a Glasshouse" (from their Amnesiac album) to the movie, but for whatever reason that is not included in here. Please note: the tracks are not sequenced on this soundtrack as they appear in the movie.

Just a couple of words as to the movie: the movie is hard to categorize and is a little bit all over the place. Yes, there is science-fiction, and yes, it pits science against religion, but it is so much more than that.
