Enya's "Orinoco Flow" was the Irish diva's first mainstream hit. It made Celtic New Age music respectable. Enya paved the way for Riverdance, Michael Flatley's Lord of the Dance/Feet of Flames, and the bland Celtic Woman. "Orinoco Flow" is a rousing,catchy,toe-tapping New Age song... which makes it unusual. Most New Age music nowadays is best suited for the spa,yoga,meditation;it HAS to be calming. In this case,Enya gives New Age a beat."Orinoco Flow" is an ode to voyages. It's as much about being inward bound as going out to sea. It evokes unfurling the mast,the shifting tides. "Orinoco Flow" has the rousing chorus "sail away,sail away." Ahoy! |
