Product Description

The only thing this feature-packed Orion Dynamo 12-volt rechargeable field battery doesn't do is make toast! Our Dynamo Pro 17Ah Rechargeable 12V DC Power Station is a conveniently portable power supply you can take with you into the field to power motorized GoTo telescopes, astrophotography cameras, powered astronomy accessories and more. This 17Ah (amp-hour) model works just like our popular Dynamo Pro 12Ah field battery, but provides 40 percent more power storage! The Dynamo Pro 17 is a portable DC power supply featuring two 12-volt cigarette lighter or auto-lighter style output ports (10 amps max.). The Orion Dynamo Pro 17 Ah enables you to power your astronomy gear during long observing and/or astrophotography sessions in the field. Two convenient 5V USB outputs are also built-in to provide power to USB devices and adapters. It's fully rechargeable, and includes 110V and 12V DC charging adapters. The included, interchangeable 110V-240v AC adapter plugs for UL (US style plug, 110V/60Hz), BS (230V/50Hz) and Europe (230V/50Hz) standard voltage AC outlets provide international versatility. A helpful indicator light tells you when the battery needs recharging. The Orion Dynamo Pro 17Ah Rechargeable Power Station has a host of other handy features built-in, such as a removable red flashlight with 11-foot cable and magnetic mount, a very bright white LED spotlight (ideal for picking up astronomy gear after a long observing session), an AM/FM radio, and a circuit breaker fuse to ensure safe operation. You can even attach jumper cables to the Dynamo Pro to help revive a dead battery. With so many useful features, you'll find the Dynamo Pro 17Ah indispensable not only for observing sessions, but also around the house, yard, and in vehicles for emergency situations. The Orion Dynamo Pro 17Ah Rechargeable Power Station weighs 16 lbs., 8 oz. Regular recharging is required for optimal use.

If the Orion unit provides the longevity that my Celestron has, I know I'll love it.

My Orion Dynamo was purchased to backup my 6 year old Celestron Pro 17 Power tank which still works but it is getting old.
The Orion Dynamo Pro 17 is (in my opinion) a clone of the Celestron Pro 17 Power Tank with a few differences: One is black and one is gray, I don't have a color preference. Orion's unit powers two separate USB outlets while the Celestron unit powers individual 3,6 & 9v ports. I have used them all without problem, but I lean more towards the USB usage. The Celestron unit has jumper cables built in with alligator clips on the open end, the Orion unit does not have cables but does have connectors to hook jumper cables or screw on eyelets. I have used the Celestron unit once to jump a neighbors car without incident, but I bought these batteries to operate my telescope, so I don't really care about jumper cables. If you ever wanted to parallel batteries however, I think the Orion set up would provide the more secure option. Last, Orion costs about $11 more than does Celestron.
Operationally: As stated, my Celestron unit is 6 years old, I've never had a problem with it, the charger or components. the Orion is brand new. Both have AM & FM radio's which are limited in functionality. I don't use them when star gazing and if I wanted music, I'd use other source options. I also do not use the spot light but both work. The removable red flashlight is great! The Celestron light is brighter than the preferred Orion's dimmer light (night vision). Both are well made with very good quality.
My only CON is that I wish they made it easier to change the battery. It's cheaper to replace, but you don't know about the control electronics or charger circuits in a new unit!

All the power you could ever ask for. This thing is very nice. But it is a bit heavy and big, so keep that in mind before buying.

This is a wonderful power supply for my astronomy needs. It powered my dew-fighting equipment for several hours no problem and still have a lot of power left. I haven't tried to run a laptop on this yet, so I don't know how it would fare if I really tested the limits, but if your needs are fairly modest this will give you all you need.

I am very happy that I settled on this unit. So far, it has lived up to the ratings. I have not given it a full night test yet, but expect it to perform as promised.

Three month warranty. At four months it won't charge. Dead as dead can be. How convenient. Lesson learned on Orion products. Maybe somebody knows how to change the battery because Orion wouldn't even tell me because they don't sell replacement parts, just the entire thing.
