Product Description

For a portable telescope that excels at wide-field stargazing, look no further than the Orion Go Scope 80mm Tabletop Refractor Telescope. This ultra-compact, entry-level refractor with a tabletop mount makes a great, high-quality first telescope for beginning stargazers. But it's not just for newbie's - the Go Scope 80mm Tabletop Refractor's convenient small size makes it a true grab-and-go telescope, perfect for the mobile interests of more experienced hobbyists. The entire telescope weighs just 5.65 lbs. assembled (including eyepiece and reflex sight) so it's easy for anyone on the family to take it out to the backyard table or favorite observing site. With an 80mm objective lens and 350mm focal length (f/4.3), the Go Scope 80 refractor performs rather impressively for its modest size, collecting over 30% more light than its 70mm counterpart, and over 70% more light than a 60mm refractor. Not only will views appear brighter in the Go Scope 80 Tabletop Refractor Telescope, but you'll be able to see more objects in the night sky with this telescope compared to smaller diameter models. The included 20mm and 10mm 1.25 inch telescope eyepieces will aid in your exploration of the solar system as you observe the Moon's craters and seas, the rings of Saturn, and the moons of Jupiter. The 20mm telescope eyepiece provides modest 17.5x power magnification, which is excellent for observing vast open star clusters and bright deep-sky objects. You can use the included 10mm telescope eyepiece to boost the Go Scope 80's magnification up to 35x for more powerful views of the Moon's cratered surface and more. As you scan the Milky Way, you'll also be delighted by gorgeous views of globular star clusters, as well as a nebula or two.

I bought an orion 80 mm refractor telescope and couldn't be happier.
As a guy who read reviews to really know what is helpful about this telescope i learned what you
want to know by buying it.
I can state the following (Straight to the point):

1) You can get amazing views of the moon, maria, craters and even the mountains of Theophilus. (With or without a 2x barlow)
2) You can see Saturn, it's rings, cassini division, faint moons and even the planet's shadow. (With a 2x barlow)
3) Jupiter, Io, Callisto, Europa and Ganymede. (Clearer view of the bands with a 2x barlow)
4) Andromeda Galaxy
5) Orion nebula
6) Honestly alot more... countless messier objects.

The telescope is highly portable, i recommend buying the mini equatorial mount from orion (EQ1) also.
Images are clear and crisp.

You can upgrade this small telescope to get larger images by using a 2x barlow or 3x barlow.

Just as a reference, saturn's rings are visible at x70 more or less magification and the highest useful capability
is 160x...
I tried stacking 2 barlow lenses together to push this telescope to the limits. Combining a 2x barlow with a 3x gave me 5x power. I thought this was to much for this small telescope but i got big detailed images of saturn and jupiter.

Great telescope, cheap, great quality, fully upgradeable.

(The EZ finder is good but unconfortable).

I already own an Orion 10" dobs but due to a recent injury it's hard to use it right now and I just can't function without astronomy so after a little research I decided on Orion's GoScope 80mm Refractor and I ordered it from Amazon because I've dealt with with them before and their service is always great. Had the GoScope out of the box, put together, and out under the night sky in twenty minutes. Nailed the moon, jupiter, and Orion nebula in no time thanks to the included red-dot EZ-Finder. My astronomy pals are all used to bigger and more powerful telescopes but this little gem of a machine made an impression on them all with it's quality optics and ease of use. I'll be using the GoScope at the next star party to show the newbies how easy it is to get into astronomy with a quality telescope for under $100 bucks and how good the service is from Amazon.

The GoScope is a fantastic small telescope with an incredible optical quality. Easy to find deep sky objects, thanks to its large field of view, that brings the brightest stars, clusters and in their eyes. The mount is smooth and accurate sound track will make even satellites. Its focuser is accurate and effective. Great buy.

This is a beautiful grab and go scope. A lot of value for the $119 I paid for it. Very good optics.
Some color fringing on the limb of the moon. Spectacular views of the lunar terminator region at 100
power using a 7mm wide angle (60 deg. apparent fov) and a 2X Barlow. Excellent views of Saturn,
especially with the Barlow and good seeing conditions. Larger and brighter deep sky objects (such as
the wealth of treasures in Saggitarius and Scorpio) are beautiful in their stellar surroundings at low
powers in the larger field of view the f/4.2 scope provides. The mount is solid, so that views are
steady even at high powers.

The scope mount can be placed on a tripod head that has the standard 1/4-20 coupling. I found that
arrangement awkward. However, since the scope is locked into the mount via a Vixen-type dove-tail plate
and a set screw, I was able to put the scope directly onto both the Vixen Porta Mount that I use for
larger scopes. and a Sky-Watcher AZ-4 I bought for this scope in order to take it and leave it at my
vacation home.

(Note: In my opinion, the much less expensive Sky-Watcher AZ-4 is as good an alt-azimuth platform for a
small scope like the GoScope 80 as the Vixen Porta Mount. The choice of mounts that the dove-tail plate
gives you makes me wish that Orion had offered the scope as a stand-alone optical tube assembly at a
reduced price.)

.
The only drawback of this scope is the star diagonal, a proprietary model that screws in to the end
of the scope, rather than sliding into a tube with a set screw or two to hold it in place. So there
is no way you can upgrade the star diagonal or put in a terrestrial diagonal to convert the telescope
to a spotting scope. It would be nice if Orion would correct this minor flaw.

I ordered this telescope for my daughter and she likes it. It's so bright to view moon that we have to block half of the object lens. The craters and seas on the moon look very clear, but I am afraid I have to use 2X barlow to view Jupiter and Orion nebulous. The telescope is well designed, my only concern is that it's better to have a eye piece holder on the swivel base. Anyway, my daughter and I like it.

I bought this telescopoe based on other reviews. I was looking for an inexpensive way to view the moon and planets. I am amazed. I followed the other recommendations to purchase the 2X barlow lens also and I am glad that I did. With it we had a crystal clear image of the moon and could clearly see the craters. My kids were in awe! We also we able to line my camera up to take a nice picture of what we saw. The view of the stars in the sky is amazing through the scope. Unbeleivable what can be seen and the ease of use is wonderful. It is sturdy and it locks in nicely. Cheaper scopes have left us frustrated and dissappointed when you lock in on something and the slightest mis-move causes you to lose sight. The viewfinder on this scope works quite nicely when calibrated in. A fun way to get kids interested in the starry night!
