Product Description

Product Description

The Orion StarShoot AutoGuider's sensor is a high-resolution, 1/2" format 1.3-megapixel CMOS monochrome chip, with 5.2 micro x 5.2 micro pixels for highly accurate guiding. That high accuracy due to the small pixel size means you can use the AutoGuider with smaller, less expensive guide scopes than is possible with other guide cameras. The chip resides in a super-compact, anodized aluminum housing that measures just 2.5" wide by 2.35" long and weighs a mere 4.4 oz. It has a 1.25" nosepiece that can be removed to access a T-thread interface. The AutoGuider's short inward focus requirement of only 15mm from a typical 1.25" Plossl eyepiece makes it compatible with virtually any telescope. The incredible ease of use will appeal to beginning and experienced astrophotographers alike. The included software requires no previous knowledge of autoguiding. It offers automatic calibration and guiding with literally a single mouse click. The camera is powered via your computer's high-speed USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 connection with the included 10' USB cable; no other power source is needed. A 6' RJ-12 cable is also included to connect the AutoGuider to the mount without the need for an additional RS-232 adapter. With the StarShoot AutoGuider, precision autoguiding for deep-sky astrophotography is now easier and more economical than ever. Get one today for your imaging setup! One-year limited warranty. Requires PC running Windows XP, Vista, 7, or Windows 8 Operating Systems

Orion's StarShoot Autoguider drivers will not operate with USB 3.0. New Win8 laptops only have USB 3.0 ports. I discovered this after spending lots of money on a new Acer Ultrabook. Orion says that the driver "doesn't play nicely with USB 3.0." That is an understatement because it doesn't work at all. Orion doesn't point out this incompatibility on its web site, in its sales info or any other documentation. They may be working on an update, but they took over a year to fix the same problem with Vista 64-bit drivers.
No issues with USB 2.0 on old XP laptops.

I would like to clear up the Windows 8 thing. I am a long time MAC USER.....I have recently taken up astrophotography. I bought a Windows 8 loaded light weight laptop for astronomy only as most of the astro software I needed was windows designed. Yes, I do have VMware on my MACs with Windows XP but my 17 inch Macbook Pro was to heave to haul around. I had the same problems trying to get the SSAG to work. ...I just had to manually add he drivers in Device Manager and walla...they work on both USB2 and USB3. This was an easy fix as soon as I found out how to locate the drivers. Make sure you load VERSION 4 from the ORION site...and also use the PHD version 1.14. The SSAG is awesome!

This autoguider worked fine. It's so neat! I use a macintosh, and it was very nice to find an auto guider that would work on a mac.

I tried another product, by Celeston which didn't require a computer at all, but it required a heavy battery pack and I couldn't get to work. Plus, a computer is pretty useful for digital astrophotography, and doesn't weigh much more than the battery pack. I highly recommend the Orion auto guider over the Celestron product for that reason (and almost all my other equipment, including scope is from Celestron)

The included software "PHD" is simple as can be, and was able to keep centered on fairly faint guide stars. In my first try I was able to do 5 minute exposures with no star trails, whereas before my best efforts at polar alignments almost never got me past 3 minutes.

At first, I had trouble because a cable going from the cable to the mount was plugged in wrong (easy to do in the dark) and the software PHD doesn't really tell you if the mount is properly connected when the connection goes from computer --> camera --> mount. I'd say the only thing that didn't work the way the instructions said, was that you can't get the camera to work through a guidescope during the day (for testing and trying out the focusing) because the gain control doesn't seem go down low enough. I was eventually able to get that to work by blocking 90% of my aperture and by using a moon filter with the camera. Anyway, you'd never be using the auto guider during the day, so it doesn't matter much.

Excellent guider. I was using a small webcam and an 80mm refractor for guiding and I was always struggling to find a suitable guide star. With the Orion auto guider I have several stars to choose from immediately. The smaller pixel size is nice too. Worked great right out of the box.

This little no frills camera, when used with the included Stark Labs PHD software, does exactly what it's advertised to do. It guides! I have it attached to an Orion ST80 on ADM rings and rails, piggybacked on my LX200. Zero issues with ASCOM interface. My only complaint is that it was backordered by the manufacturer for a couple of weeks, however it was delivered before promised. This may be testament to the popularity of this camera at the right price point. If you need a good CCD autoguider that doesn't break the bank, the Orion SSAG fits the bill.

This product was "promised" to work with windows 8, yet any new windows 8 laptop made is only usb 3.0 compatible. Therefore it will NOT work with windows 8 laptops hence the promise was a lie. Momma Bear is not happy. Out in the middle of a field there are no power bars for PC's, hence the need for a laptop. The only laptop I have is a brand new windows 8 laptop hence my issues. I spent money in good faith on a piece of equipment that will never work. I am waiting to find out what you the manufacturer will do about this.

Downloaded software from Orion Web Site. Camera working very well on all my OS's. Windows XP lap top, widows XP desk top, And windows 8.1 desk top. So far camera works great! Very easy to use. People who are having problems with this. Just needs to make sure they have the correct drivers installed. Windows 8.1 gave me some problems for a time. But now. Good To Go! Works great imaging tree limbs on the next street. Can't wait to try it out on the stars!

The Orion SSAG is an affordable autoguider. Works well with PHD and includes all software necessary. The default settings are plug and play. In PHD you may need to alter the advanced settings (brain icon) to help with settling the RA and DEC. Use the graph to monitor and alter settings until the guiding smooth's out. I am happy with my purchase...
