I was looking for good general purpose binoculars with a few things in mind. I wanted a fixed power to keep the cost down, yet with decent magnification and field of view. This 8x40 Orion fits the bill perfectly. With coated lenses and 40mm objectives, it gives bright, crisp and wide views. And viewing is easy even without the most stable of hands. I was really impressed with the combination. I also wanted binoculars that were sealed and gas-filled for reliable use outdoors. This requirement typically raises the cost to another level, but not with Orion. The price on this beauty is about the same you would pay for a pair without. I am very pleased my diligence in searching out and reviewing dozens of models led me to this brand. Even though they are built overseas, this entry-level set of specs surpasses all my expectations for the price I paid. You can't go wrong with a pair of these for beginners, as a back-up for more serious users or as a wonderful, high-quality yet affordable gift.
