Product Description

It's the first-ever star chart that folds up like a road map! DeepMap 600 shows the positions of the 600 finest celestial objects visible from the Northern Hemisphere. All are plotted on a giant 33" x 21" full-color star chart by world-renowned star-mapper Wil Tirion. DeepMap 600 is designed for easy location of hundreds of deep-sky objects with telescopes and binoculars. Color-coded symbols identify more than 500 galaxies, nebulas, and star clusters-including all 109 Messier objects-as well as some 100 of the most interesting double and variable stars. No other single star chart includes so many objects! What makes DeepMap 600 really indispensable is that it folds up accordion style to a thin, pocket-size 4-3/4" x 10-1/2-just like a road map! No longer must you fumble with bulky books, star atlases, and observing references to find interesting objects to view.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Pocket Star Chart?, February 1, 2010
By
Morgan Davies (Scarborough, Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Orion DeepMap 600 Folding Star Chart (Electronics)
The Orion DeepMap 600 Folding Star Chart is my favorite for binocular astronomy, travel astronomy and a "quick look" at the stars.

It folds up like a road map and fits in my coat pocket. It is made of a tough plastic that resists wind and dew. It lists 600 deep sky objects - galaxies, nebulae, star clusters and double stars. There are more celestial objects here than most amateur astronomers will observe in a lifetime.

It also lists each object`s Right Ascension and Declination, size, brightness and a brief description of each object.

Because I find this information so helpful for finding and identifying deep sky objects I refer to the Orion DeepMap along with the superb Sky Atlas 2000 by Wil Tirion and Roger W. Sinnott.

The only real weakness of the Orion DeepMap is the absence of the sky south of -60*. But this is of absolutely no consequence for observers north of 30* north latitude, and it is of little consequence anywhere in the northern hemisphere.

The Orion DeepMap successfully bridges the gap between a good planesphere, such as David Levy`s Guide To The Stars, and a high end star chart such as the Star Atlas 2000. Because of it`s dew resistance, extreme portability and the information about over 600 deep sky objects, the Orion Deep Map 600 has unique benefits that make it, for me at least, not only the best pocket star chart for the money, but among the most useful star charts available at any price.

Clear Skies...

5.0 out of 5 stars money wasted ?, June 1, 2011
This review is from: Orion DeepMap 600 Folding Star Chart (Electronics)
THIS IS A GREAT BEGINNERS MAP. IT WILL HELP YOU LEARN THE NIGHT SKY BETTER FIRST OF ALL. IT HAS THE R.A. AND DEC. SETTINGS FOR THE 600 OBJECT FOR SETTING CIRCLES OR GO-TO SCOPES. I DON'T THINK IT WOULD BE VERY GOOD FOR STAR HOPPING, NOT ENOUNGH DETAIL. I DID BUY 2 MAPS TO PUT UP IN MY DOME. THERE GREAT EYE CANDY AND I CAN QUICKLY SHOW MY GRANDKIDS (10 & 12) WHERE WE ARE LOOKING AND THAY LOVE IT. THAN ARE FINDING THE STAR AND THE WEIRD FIGURES IN THE SKY WITH A LITTLE HELP. I MADE SURE I CAN TAKE THEM DOWN SO THAY CAN GO OUT IN THE FIELD WITH US. MADE FROM TUFF BUT SOFT PLASTIC, DEW OR A TURNED OVER DRINK NOT GOING TO HURT THEM. YOU MUST MADE SURE THAY ARE DRY WHEN FOLDED AND STORED OR IT WILL GET MOLD ON IT. YOU WILL OUT GROW OF IT BUT I DON,T THINK YOU GET RID OF IT IF YOU GOT KIDS OR DO PUBIC STAR PARTIES. HOPED THIS HELP. ODELL C.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hopping my way back home, December 4, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Orion DeepMap 600 Folding Star Chart (Electronics)
Good map. Laminate is good for the field. Has a full view of the sky. I was able to use it star hop during my last observing session under dark skies in Canada. My only complaint was the area I was using was in the break point, but you have to put it somewhere;>). Thought I bought it at a good price, but the shipping for a fold up map was almost $10.00 which seems excessive for a fold up map from California to Illinois.
