Product Description

Refractor lovers, take notice! We've combined our 120mm (f/8.3) achromatic refractor with our exclusive SkyView Pro equatorial mount to create an instrument of epic performance. The SkyView Pro 120 is the next generation of high-end equatorial refractor, without the high-end price tag. The optical tube is finished in metallic silver enamel. But it's what's inside that is most impressive: a big, multi-coated 120mm (4.7") achromatic objective lens of 1000mm focal length (f/8.3) in an adjustable cell. The 2" aluminum rack-and-pinion focuser (with 1.25" adapter) allows use of optional 2" eyepieces. The SkyView Pro equatorial mount provides the rigid stability demanded by avid astronomers. It features dual slow-motion controls and accommodates optional TrueTrack single- or dual-axis DC drives for electronic tracking. Includes a 6x30 finder scope, a star diagonal, and two Sirius Plossl eyepieces. One-year limited warranty.

5.0 out of 5 stars Five Star Optics Four Star Owners' Manual, September 24, 2008
By
This review is from: Orion SkyView Pro 120mm EQ Refractor Telescope (Electronics)
First I want to say that I am very happy with this telescope. The optics are outstanding. I have had it two months now, and have only been able to use it a few times, but the views I have gotten have been outstanding. Jupiter for one is great and I have enjoyed using it for observing double stars (Eta Cassiopeiae for example).

My only criticism would be the owners' manual. The second time I used the scope, I had extreme difficulty in setting the latitude wit the Latitude Adjustment L-bolts. In fact, it wouldn't budge and the bolts got stuck and would not come out. I had to use a pair of pliers to unscrew the bolts. After talking with Orion tech support they let me in on the secret. Don't place the Optical Tube on the mount until after you set the initial latitude. I tried it and everything worked fine. Orion tech support even sent me an extra Latitude Adjustment L-bolt to replace the one I knurled up with the wrench.

These instructions were not in the owners' manual.

This is an excellent telescope that I highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars High expectations meet!, July 13, 2010

I am as new as it gets for a stargazer. I have done weeks of reseach to learn as much as i can so i can decide witch is the best telescope for me. Personally, i dont think there is a best telescope for anyone because every kind of scope has different results, advantages, and disadvantages. So before i even purchased this 120mm refractor, i already had an idea on what my second telescope will be. I went with the 120mm refractor first because i read great reviews on how well it works in the city lights and let me tell you, it is phenomonal! First thing i looked for was Saturn. Once i put the 10mm eyepiece in, i saw Saturns rings clear as day. Through the 10mm eyepiece planets are still very small. Dont expect to see them really really close up. None the less it is overwhelming being able to see the rings of Saturn and the bands on Jupiter. If you want to get a better zoom you have to buy a lower mm eyepiece. It took about 5 days for me to recieve it. It was well packed and organized. I ran into maybe 1 or 2 snags when reading the set up instructions but figured it out. I didnt even think about calling customer service it was fairly easy. From the day i took this beast out of the box, it has done nothing but make me feel amazed. I recommend this telescope to anyone interested in getting the best views of Planets, The Moon, and Stars for an affordable price.

The first ond only scope I've ever owned was a cheap department store model. Sold that many years ago planning on purchasing an auto-goto scope. Couldn't afford one and was getting desperate to buy a scope. Decided that ultimately I wanted a Refractor, a Dobs and a Schmidt-Cassegrain (or a Ritchey-Chrétien). Decided to fill out my collection by starting with a solid Refractor... Wow! This things huge! Much bigger than I expected. I haven't had a chance to take it out yet but I'm confident that it will knock the socks off my old department store bought piece of junk. Assembly was easy, quality is very high!
