I debated for a while before trying one of these steamers. They are gorgeous, but I wondered whether the small capacity and the flexibility of the silicone (especially with a bowl full of stuff that's hot enough to burn you) would be a problem. Not so. I would not heat up soup in this dish without putting it on a plate first, but for vegetables, meat or rice, the handles are rigid enough that the dish is safe to carry with hot food in it. I liked this steamer so much that I later ordered three more, to be able to fix individual one-dish meals for each person in our household. The others haven't arrived yet, but I have used this to steam vegetables in the microwave and it does a splendid job with NO added liquid or just a few drops' worth. Even with new potatoes. I like the result much better than steaming over water. The flavors are much more concentrated this way. The black color is a departure for me, but I like it, as it makes for a classy-looking presentation. I got this to use when traveling, because it can be squished into packable space, but I liked it so much that it lives in the kitchen cabinets the rest of the time, and I have discarded some other microwave stuff that doesn't compare.

Tight fitting lid allows for perfect steaming with less energy and nutriontaional value of food wasted. Small size great for 2x portion of vegetable or small single portion of fish, chicken. Collapsing silicon allows for better storage.

This is a 2 piece silicone bowl not a steamer. You do need water in it, even for frozen veggies (unless you like them brown). Because silicone is flexible it does not form a tight seal so the steam escapes. This takes longer for the food to cook. I'm very disappointed.
