4.0 out of 5 stars Background of Orlando's scenes, May 9, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Orlando: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
Overall, this is an excellent album. The Jimmy Somerville song "Coming" is faithfully reproduced here. I wish I could say the same for the second track "Eliza." "Eliza," as it is performed in the actual film, is a beautiful song and was the reason I searched so long for this soundtrack. When I saw its name on the listing I didn't think twice about purchasing the album. Unfortunately, Jimmy Somerville's scene of singing it in the film must be simply considered dialogue because this track only features the background instruments to that scene and the credits. There is only a bare, and extremely short, echo of its actually being sung. I was truly dissappointed. I recommend, as I should have done, that people listen to samples before they buy. But the rest of the album is spectacular.

5.0 out of 5 stars Went back to the theatre to LISTEN to the movie the next day, March 29, 2000
This review is from: Orlando: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
When the lights came up after "Coming" blew me away I sat there stunned. My friends patiently waited for me as I recovered. The next day I went back to a matinee showing and sat in the almost empty theatre drinking in the sound of this film. The soundtrack is absolutely wonderful! I relive the movie in part when I listen to it. I had a roommate when this movie came out who bought the CD and he fell asleep to it every night for a month. Some of the transitions on the soundtrack are a wee bit abrupt, but no more so than other soundtracks (better in fact than a lot) I've worked "Coming" into my DJ sessions and always get great comments. Well worth owning if you liked the movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful!, March 1, 2000

This review is from: Orlando: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
The score of this movie is more than magical, but the best reason to get it is for "Coming". This song has a "world beat" texture and the great falsetto of Jimmy Somerville adds to the mix. The song is basically having a person who has learned from and survived the past,is revelling in the freedom of the present, and embraces the future with open arms and all the hope and promise it brings. Get this for sure!

5.0 out of 5 stars This soundtrack rocks, July 15, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Orlando: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
I admit I bought this CD just for Jamie Somverville's song Coming. Coming just blows me away everytime I hear it. It is not often that you listen to a song that will make you dance and think. The song is full of contradictions. The singer is everything and nothing at the same time. Dying and being born at the same time. This jibes so well with the scene in the movie in which Orlando realizes that he/she is 'The same person but a different sex'. Its almost as if saying we are all really the same its just blind luck which type of body you get born into. The uplifting verse about being free makes this one of my all time favorite songs. We are all hopefully be(Coming) something better.

I loved the movie, the soundtrack, the whole package (whatever the wrapping paper was).It was all Great! But the Jimmy Sommerville song is so beautiful!! I went and bought some of his other stuff but it wasn"t the same..

I wished he would do a Cd with that type of singing!

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb, March 20, 2007
This review is from: Orlando: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
Wonderful sound track. Modernistic music that produces a strange, yet highly appropriate background sound to Virginia Woolf's work of historical fiction.
Somerville's clean falsetto voice is appropriate as the Elizabethan castrato and finally as the hovering angel.
One of my favorite CDs.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent soundtrack to an excellent film, May 24, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Orlando: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
I first saw this film at the small local independent film theatre in 1993 and I stunned: both in imagery and sound.

After seeing the film several times I read the book. I have to say this is one of the few instances where the film does the writing justice.

The acting in this film is superb, most noticeable, obviously, Tilda Swindon, but also the shorts by Billy Zane (also excellent in Dead Calm) and Quentin Crisp.

One of my favorite scenes in the film is the winter party for the Russians. the track Pavanne is one of my favorites - a blend of soft drumming and beautiful violins. Also very good is The King's Tulips. Inspirational.

Most people will by this CD for the Coming track. It's also very well done, but be sure to give the rest of this soundtrack a good listen too.

Not only is this movie amazing, so is the soundtrack. I read Orlando in one sitting, and immeadiatly saw the movie and watched it twice in a row. The sound adds so much to the movie. Even if I didn't like the movie I would definatly dig this soudtrack. I highly reccomend this CD!
