Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-7?Lessem focuses on two of the lesser-known dinosaurs. In Ornithomimids, he shows how scientists have pieced together clues to deduce the running speed of this fast, ostrich-like creature. By measuring the distance between fossilized footprints, they have determined that it ran at least 25 miles per hour. The second book concentrates on the Troodon, explaining how the size of its brain case, the size of its eye sockets, and its teeth all imply that it was a pretty smart carnivore. These dinosaurs are covered in other dictionaries, such as Michael Benton's Dinosaur and Other Prehistoric Factfinder (Kingfisher, 1992). However, the earlier books may already be out of date (Benton's entry on Ornithomimus says nothing about its swiftness). The abundant photos and full-color illustrations in Lessem's volumes help explain the text and include pictures of excavation sites, the scientists doing research, as well as the animals themselves. In short, these titles provide recent scientific facts in a format easily accessible to kids doing reports on an individual dinosaur.?Cathryn A. Camper, Minneapolis Public Library
