Impressive melodic progressive rock album,

This review is from: Orphan Found (Audio CD)
2003's Orphan Found is the debut album from US-based progressive rock act Orphan Project. The band has a fascinating sound that incorporates elements of classic melodic rock, neo-progressive rock and even some progressive metal touches. Think Asia and Peter Gabriel plus Marillion and Kansas with some Spock's Beard thrown in for good measure.
Orphan Found is a concept album. Vocalist Shane Lankford, who possesses a very warm and powerful voice similar to Peter Gabriel's, was an orphan himself, and conveys that experience through these very emotional songs. It's just a fascinating album, full of lush melodies, soaring vocals, beautiful instrumental passages and real emotion that's laid bare for all to see. There is some really intricate guitar work here, and the violin section gives the album a Kansas feel at times. There are other moments when the guitars take a heavier tone that I'm reminded of Porcupine Tree and Riverside. I'd probably give it a full 5-star rating but the album drags a bit towards the last few songs. There are Christian overtones throughout the album, but they're subtle and not overbearing. It's a Christian rock album the way most Neal Morse albums are. Orphan Found is a beautiful and fascinating debut from one of the most promising progressive rock artists in America. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys any of the bands I mentioned earlier, or just well-crafted modern rock in general. |
