Ok, this is perplexing. There are 3 reviews here so far and all 3 are movie reviews for "Orphan." Since this page is for the *soundtrack* to the movie, let's try to do this right...

Whenever I see a movie, one of the things I always pay attention to is the music and how effective it is in creating the mood/tone for the story. This is especially true when the music is primarily an orchestral score, as is the case with "Orphan." As I watched the movie and listened to the music, I thought it fit the film quite well. I'm not very familiar with John Ottman's catalog but I liked his music for "Orphan" enough to make me buy the album, and after listening to it a few times I would definitely say that it stands on its own and is an enjoyable listen.

Ottman nicely captures the innocence as well as malice of Esther's character through this score. Some tracks have a melancholy, low-key feel (ie: "Suite for Jessica and Max" and "Silent Story/Max's Theme"), but the majority of the album paints an eerie and chilling musical landscape. This contrast works quite well as it perfectly sets the mood for the false childhood innocence of Esther as well as her malicious personality. I also appreciate how the music never becomes over-the-top, as that would certainly have lessened its impact a great deal.

I do have one issue with this soundtrack though, and that is the final 3 tracks, which are traditional songs and not orchestral. To me they just feel out of place, especially "Orphan's Revenge" which almost sounds like a song from an electronica band. I can't remember if they were all used in the movie, and if so they may have worked in that context, but they just stick out too much here. I also think the 24-second sample of "Glory of Love" sung by Esther, which is the first track on the album, would have made a fitting final track instead of the regular version.

Still, I can easily recommend this soundtrack to anyone who liked the movie. While hardly original, it accomplishes the task of portraying the story of "Orphan" in a competent and memorable way.

When I first Went To See This Film At The Theaters I knew Just A Little About The Film. I Thought It Looked Cliched And Very Dull, Boy Was I Wrong.

I Enjoyed The Film So Much That I Even Enjoyed The Score To The Film Just As Well.

John Ottman Captures The Feel Of The Story In The Music.

I Personally Recommend This Soundtrack To Anyone Who Enjoys Music That Sets A Eerie Mood And Does A Very good Job At Building Suspense Within The Score.

A Must Have For Any Hardcore Fans Of Orphan!!

5.0 out of 5 stars This movie was freaking scary !!, July 25, 2009
This review is from: Orphan [Original Motion Picture Soundtrack] (Audio CD)
I watched this movie last night in a theater, and the movie was intense and scary with a decent story. The film was a little cheesy for first 10 to 20 minutes, but it was not bad at all. As the parent adopted the little orphan, Esther (the evil child), this movie began to go through very disturbing sequence. Some parts of the movie even made me sick to watch when the Esther became a brutal murder and tried to destroy the whole family. There are also many gruesome and gory scenes disturbing me to keep watching this movie. Brick, knife, hammer, gasoline, and more; Esther used those tools to kill the people who tried to find out the truth and ruin her life. This film is R-rated, and I hope no kids would watch this movie. The ending part was very intense and creepy. I don't want to tell you the story because it would be a spoiler, but nobody could predict the last sequel for sure! When the movie got to the ending part, it explained everything about her secret and her real background. I recommend this movie except some of disturbing scenes. But, overally it was a great movie for summer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Unique Film, August 2, 2009
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Orphan [Original Motion Picture Soundtrack] (Audio CD)
I initially went to the movies to get a cheap laugh, since I thought this would be just another cliche, homicidal crazy child flick. However, I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. I especially enjoyed the acting by the mother of the family, who was the first person to recognize Esther's (Esther is the adopted child around whom this film is centered) disturbing behavior, and the last person who anyone would listen to.

The movie has a very interesting twist on the character of Esther, as well as her adopted mother. I found the movie very engaging throughout, and it was really tragic to watch Esther's adopted mother try to reach out only to be betrayed and humiliated by Esther, her manipulative yet very resourceful adopted daughter. I highly recommend horror and suspense fans to check this movie out!
