Her Best Album To Date, August 13, 2008
This review is from: Orphans & Angels (Audio CD)
With 'Orphans And Angels' -- Ms. Miller's third album -- the quirky yet vulnerable Texan singer has made her best and most consistent recording to date. Its strengths are many, not the least of which is the decision to put good songs over her endearing zaniness. That was almost the undoing of her exceptional 1990 debut 'Meet Julie Miller.' An album about loss -- of friends, namely singer Mark Heard; and innocence, in a world that wants to drag you down to its level -- there is a feeling of melancholia that paradoxically pervades such an enjoyable recording. The presence of fellow roots singers Emmylou Harris, Shawn Colvin, and Valerie Carter adds to the feeling, especially on the haunting tribute to Heard, "All My Tears (Be Washed Away)" (a duet with Harris) and "Treasure Of The Broken Land" (featured on his posthumous album 'Satellite Sky'). The album is full of hard-won observations, as Julie sings on "Angels Dance": "When a child that's been world-weary reaches out his hands, God will go the distance to meet him with a smile so wide it'll make the angels dance." Knowing the song was co-written by multiple sclerosis sufferer and all-round heroine Victoria Williams gives the words extra poignancy. In the States, attention has been drawn to "SOS (Sick Of Sex)," a track left off 1991's 'He Walks Through Walls' at the insistence of her record company, and which the same record company is now using to promote this one. In the song, Julie condemns Hollywood and Madison Avenue for using sex to sell anything but love. Perhaps she ought to write another about the hypocrisy of some Christian record companies. - James Tweed, CrossRhythmsUK 10/01/93

4 1/2 Stars: A Sound All Her Own, February 26, 2008
This review is from: Orphans & Angels (Audio CD)
Julie Miller received her first real attention with the release of Buddy Miller's 1995 HighTone debut, Your Love And Other Lies, for which she co-wrote several songs and sang on three. Her songwriting soon attracted the attention of Emmylou Harris, who recorded Julie's "All My Tears" (from 1993's Orphans And Angels) as did jazz vocalist Jimmy Scott. "Emmylou Harris and Little Jimmy Scott both did amazing renditions of 'All My Tears'," says Julie. The Millers toured with Steve Earle, whose rockin' mandolin was the inspiration for Julie to re-record the song. "I told him he was my favorite mandolin player," says Miller. Earle's reply: "I'm sorry."
Besides Harris and Buddy Miller, who also co-produced, Shawn Colvin and Jim Lauderdale help out on the album. Most of the songs were written by Julie Miller. She also covers Jackie DeShannon's "Put A Little Love In Your Heart."
Julie Miller combines elements of rock, folk, and blues, as well as English and Celtic music, to shape a sound all her own.
