Book Description

Field Translation Series January 2005
Dino Campana's small and intensely magical body of poetry from the early years of the twentieth century--prose and free verse that combine the visual and the visionary with astonishing vigor and haunting grace--is little known to English-speaking readers. Now, thanks to the efforts of Pulitzer-winning poet Charles Wright, we have the best of Campana, superbly translated, and enhanced by Jonathan Galassi's Introduction and Eugenio Montale's thoughtful essay identifying the heart of Campana's achievement. This vivid contemporary presentation will demonstrate why Italian readers have cherished Campana's poems since the first appearance of Orphic Songs in 1914.

Review

"Wright's sensitive translation of Campana's Canti Orfici captures the disturbing cadences and obsessive melodies of Campana's verse and allows the English-speaking reader entry into a compelling poetic universe. A most welcome addition" -- Choice --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Colours and Sounds, August 7, 2011

This review is from: Orphic Songs (Field Translation Series) (Hardcover)
Dino Campana was an Italian visionary poet, and in his lifetime he published only one book of poetry - the Canti Orfici. He paints with words; colours are blended with sounds, sometimes lightly, and other times he seems to stab the canvas with his brush. The first poem that I ever read by Campana was Our Roses and I instantly fell in love with his work. His writing has a beautiful balance of lightness and a feeling of impending ruin. Indeed, he was known for his wild and erratic personality and this is echoed in his writing. The translator, Charles Wright, captures this essence beautifully.
