2.0 out of 5 stars What exactly DOES it protect against?
For the record, I purchased this from Wal-Mart on sale for around $12. I needed it to spray around my new construction home because I've been having a pretty invasive amount of spiders and other little bugs coming in. I sprayed around the house and followed the directions to the tee; I even sprayed twice in some areas. And here, three weeks later, I can honestly say I...

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for the simple bugs, March 26, 2010
This review is from: Ortho 0195310 1-1/3-Gallon Home Defense Max Perimeter and Indoor Insect Killer Pull 'N Spray (Lawn & Patio)
I've used this a few times over the past 2 years. I live in an area which has lots of trees and can be overrun with bugs in the summertime. All types too, spiders, ants, carpet beetles etc. It does a really good job when I spray the outside of the house around the doors and the windows and in the overhangs where spiders like to camp. Works well around outside lighting as well, seems to do a really nice job if applied before the bugs get there. Spraying inside the house along works great as well for keeping bugs at bay, especially carpet beetles.

Only downsides are that this does not kill silverfish, and some types of spiders appear unaffected by it. It says on the package that it takes care of them but my basement still has a problem even after repeated uses of the product. Which is too bad because these things are monsters and I hate them with a passion, still haven't found a product that can effectively kill them. The other downside, as someone else pointed out, there is a lingering smell for a day or two after application. It's not terrible it's just not pleasant.

Overall for the price I'd say it's a good product. The application takes a little while if you have a large or tall house but if you hate bugs and don't want to spend the hundreds of bucks for exterminator service this is a good product which will save you money and keep a lot of the bugs away.

4.0 out of 5 stars Exterminates ants, June 15, 2009
This review is from: Ortho 0195310 1-1/3-Gallon Home Defense Max Perimeter and Indoor Insect Killer Pull 'N Spray (Lawn & Patio)
Ortho Home Defense Max

Thousands of ants were transversing a path from a lawn area to our basement door. Those ants were finding their way into our kitchen.

This stuff killed the ants and other insects the instant the spray hit them. More ants appeared in the same location the very next day, even though that area had been heavily sprayed. Using the sprayer, those ants were wiped out. Also sprayed the lawn area where they seemed to come from. A few days later, no ants had reappeared. So, for that infestation, it worked.

Ants reappeared a couple of weeks later in the same location, so the treatment doesn't last very long. Rain no doubt weakens the effect, which also happens with insecticide powder.

Pulling the pump handle out puts the tank under pressure. Then, all you do is point the pistol-grip sprayer and pull the trigger. You have to pull that handle every 10 seconds or so, as the pressure dissipates. There is a 3' hose from the jug to the sprayer and an on-board nozzle holder. No liquid gets on you, and since it doesn't atomize the liquid, you don't breathe the stuff or need a respirator.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works Great!, September 15, 2009
This review is from: Ortho 0195310 1-1/3-Gallon Home Defense Max Perimeter and Indoor Insect Killer Pull 'N Spray (Lawn & Patio)
I'll start off by saying the only reason I rated this 4 instead of 5 stars is that it does have a mild lingering smell that lasted about half a day. Not completely unpleasant... sort of made my living room smell like a pool. My husband didn't notice it, however.

The house was being overrun by huge spiders to the point where I didn't go without shoes. We sprayed the interior and exterior foundations, and a few webs/nests directly about 2 weeks ago. Haven't seen the spiders since.

Our house is also being resided and the bushes out front were torn up. Even after all of this I only found 3 bugs in my house, 2 were dead and one was twitching and almost there.

I don't know if the application in the bad reviews was incorrect or what, but it most certainly worked in our case. We put it on with somewhat of a heavy hand, but still didn't even come close to using even half the bottle doing inside, outside, and garage.

Use this product. Will save literally hundreds of dollars vs. the pros.

I sprayed around the house and followed the directions to the tee; I even sprayed twice in some areas. And here, three weeks later, I can honestly say I notice no decrease in bugs. Spiders have set up webs, crickets hop, and other assortments frolic and play exactly where I sprayed. It's quite disappointing, really. I feel like I just purchased a jug of water. Be aware - when they say it doesn't kill black widows, they mean it. See the photo I uploaded for solid proof.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Results, June 7, 2010

Between two houses we had a variety of household insect pests and were being over run by lady bugs and boxelder bugs. We also had a large spider population. I sprayed the outside perimeter and basement in the fall in one house. The results were dramatic; virtually no bugs the next spring and summer and no more spider webs in the basement. In the other house I sprayed the outside perimeter in the spring. The reduction of bugs was again dramatic. We still have the occasional spider or other bug, but nothing like it was. No ill effects on anything but the bugs.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't Use for Earwigs!, June 24, 2011
By
Alan D. Wiley (Boulder, CO United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ortho 0195310 1-1/3-Gallon Home Defense Max Perimeter and Indoor Insect Killer Pull 'N Spray (Lawn & Patio)
Tired of dealing with spiders, and in prep for earwig season, I bought this product with high hopes of creating a defense shield around my house, windows, doorways, everywhere. I just love to have my windows and doors open all season long.

The good news, the # of spiders coming into my house has dropped dramatically. I went from catching 4-6 per day to 1-2 over the past week.

Bad news: 1 hour after soaking a slanted outdoor ledge underneath a window, I watched a young earwig crawl right over the treated area, he then proceeded into the cracks of my screen. 1 week later, earwigs are in full force, crossing any barrier I created with this product, and surviving. Finding them everywhere.

I also watched a spider walk right on past, no sweat.

So things are better, but the main goal was earwig prevention, and in that regard, this product failed miserably.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Ortho 0195310 1-1/3-Gallon Home Defense Max Perimeter and Indoor Insect Killer Pull 'N Spray (Lawn & Patio)
I live in the country where the bugs are many and varied--beyond belief sometimes. This insecticide has killed everything except wasps and carpenter bees. You have to apply it liberally and let it dry. I never wait 12 months, as advised, to apply another coating. Do it every few months or half a year as you see fit. It depends on where you live and how many pests are about. I have millions to deal with, so I use a lot. I used to always find dead nasty creepy-crawlers that tried to have the run of my house at night. Now I find fewer and fewer. But always DEAD. Good riddance. Be sure to reapply this magic fluid to any areas that have gotten washed or wet. If you use it outside, reapply it often. After a rain. It works very well indoors and pretty well outdoors, as far as I can tell. A good product.

Ok I bought this product in the past & it seemed very effective. I am trying to eliminate cockroaches. I bought this product again & found that it has NO EFFECT whatsoever. I was extremely disappointed. I would not recommend this product at all. I am not sure if they changed the ingredients or what but it does not work.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not recommended for farm land, September 22, 2010
This review is from: Ortho 0195310 1-1/3-Gallon Home Defense Max Perimeter and Indoor Insect Killer Pull 'N Spray (Lawn & Patio)
I had switched from the Spectracide bug stop to this on account of all the advertisement. Perhaps it works better in a suburb area but out here in the farm area I call home. No such luck. In fact, I would say it didn't do anything at all apart from waste my time. I continually had all sorts of bugs and critters finding their way into my home. This was never the case with the Spectracide 9-month product. Perhaps I did have to re-spray it every 6 or 7 months but I didn't have any bugs crawl into the house with that product. This Ortho one leaves me killing something nearly everyday!

4.0 out of 5 stars A good inexpensive do-it-yourself home solution., August 9, 2010
This review is from: Ortho 0195310 1-1/3-Gallon Home Defense Max Perimeter and Indoor Insect Killer Pull 'N Spray (Lawn & Patio)
I bought this product to keep spiders out of the house. The pump and adjustable sprayer made getting the job done simple, holding enough pressure to get into the eaves without a ladder. The horde of small, ubiquitous spiders died instantly and have not returned in the two months since I sprayed. As stated in the product's information, the product is ineffective against Black Widows, it does kill them but requires a direct blast so I have little hope that it will keep them at bay for long. Also, as others have stated, this product does not work on ants; I sprayed an ample amount on some ants, more returned the next day in the exact spot I sprayed. Oh well, I got this to keep out spiders and it is doing a great job, have seen hardly a one.
