4.0 out of 5 stars Reg. heating pad inside. Helps arthritic dog
I have this product for already 2+ years, and it served my 11+yo Englih Setter with arthritis. Frankly, my dog prefers more her unheated Double Sided Geri-Bed (which I highly recommend), but this products deserves a good review nonetheless.

The heating element inside is a regular heating pad at the lowest setting you get in the drugstore...As dogs need lower...

3.0 out of 5 stars OK, but room for improvement
As others have noted, this bed does not get very warm on it's own, but I've felt it right after my dog got up after a long nap & it was quite toasty - I would not want it much warmer. The size of the heating element is apparently the same size, no matter how large the bed - I think it should be proportional to the bed as it seems very small for the size of hte bed...

I got this for my 13 year old Border Collie as the weather is getting colder. Getting up in our high bed was presenting some challenges after a recent shoulder injury. Since this is in our bedroom, I have it on a timer so that it is not wasting energy all day staying warm when it is not in use.

We have hardwood floors in our house & the slick fabric bottom on this bed makes it slide terribly - deterring our dog from using it (it would slip when she stepped on it). This was resolved w/ the purchase of some of that rubber matting that goes under area rugs.

Overall, not a bad product - but a larger heating element & less sliipery bottom fabric would be huge improvements.

4.0 out of 5 stars Reg. heating pad inside. Helps arthritic dog, April 22, 2007

I have this product for already 2+ years, and it served my 11+yo Englih Setter with arthritis. Frankly, my dog prefers more her unheated Double Sided Geri-Bed (which I highly recommend), but this products deserves a good review nonetheless.

The heating element inside is a regular heating pad at the lowest setting you get in the drugstore...As dogs need lower temperatures for comfort, the bed maintains a comfortable tempearture setting for a DOG, while for a person it might seem barely warm.

The fabric is sturdy and washes well, but I wish it was denser to prevent hair penetrating into the foam insert, as it is impossible to get that hair out of the foam. I finally figured to use plastic bag between the foam and the cover to mitigate the problem.

I also wish the fabric seams were better finished inside. No, it hasn't fallen apart and the zipper is in perfet shape, but seams are frayed inside, which is annoying for me... although the fraying is not visible outside.

Over the years the foam still maintains its shape, i.e hasn't sunk, but the top surface shows significant wear - however, my dog always "digs" for like 5 minutes before settling, so she ruined the surface quicker than a non-digging dog would.

Overall, the product is worth the $35-40 range, of satisfctory quality to last a few years, and looks decent. KV Vet store is fast on shipping.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant bed, September 5, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Eleven-year-old Rudy (who suffers from osteo-arthritis) had an earlier heated bed, and enjoyed it well enough, but it was nothing like this one. The Ortho Thermo bed is double-thick, and evenly warm. It seems admirmably durable, as well. Most importantly, however, I noticed an immediate change for the better in Rudy. He's spry again, and takes the lead in walks instead of lagging. I literally feel this bed has added years back. It's a winner.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice bed and a reasonable price, December 30, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought one of these beds to try it out and see what the elderly dogs in our pack thought of it before buying multiples. The bed is a bit smaller than expected - yes I checked the measurements first - but it just seems smaller in person. However, the 16 and 11 year old Dobermans both used it throughout the day and seem to really like it with the heat on and off. The 13 and 10 year old Rhodesian Ridgebacks used it and decided they prefer their older, larger beds with bolsters and no heat. The verdict is to keep the K&H Ortho Heated Bed and buy one more for the Dobermans. The heat seems to be just right - warm enough for me to feel on the bed, but not hot enough to make me worry about burns, overheating or damage to the bed itself if it's turned on for hours at a time through the winter.

3.0 out of 5 stars Barely Above Room Temperature, December 1, 2005
I would describe this product as just OK. I bought it thinking it would make a warm cozy bed but the thing BARELY gets above room temperature. I've had it on for four hours now and I seriously checked to see if my wall socket was working because the thing was so NOT warm.

I unzipped the cover and was further disappointed to see that the heating pad itself is actually very small. It is only about 60% as big as the bed itself so not all of the bed gets "warmed" up.

That said, the foam itself is firm and would probably be comfortable for a dog to sleep on.

All in all, this is not what I thought it would be.

3.0 out of 5 stars only half is warmed, October 18, 2008
This review is from: K&H Ortho Thermo-Bed (Misc.)
The bed is nice for my dog but I got the large size and the warmer is only big enough to warm about half the dog bed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for large dog with hip dysplasia, January 3, 2011

I've had small K&H heated beds for my two cats for a long time, and they love them. It recently dawned on me to buy a huge heated bed for my mom's dog, who has hip dysplasia. The dog usually jumps up onto the humans' bed to enjoy the heated mattress pad, and she kicks during the night, so this bed has not only given the dog a comfy place to sleep without having to jump (and potentially hurt her hips), but it has also settled a small territory issue.

For people new to heated pet beds, the heating elements are never as big as the bed itself. This is so that the animal is able to pick a spot on the bed that suits their temperature needs in the moment. It shouldn't be hot all over. You might be surprised at the (relatively small) size of the heating element for the size of the bed. For example, the medium and large beds have the same long and narrow element, while the extra large bed has a substantially larger, wider element (about 1/5th the overall bed size, maybe).

The heated bed won't feel hot to the touch, but it might actually be too warm for your pet's taste. Both of our cats and the dog prefer the beds with a single layer blanket on top, between the bed and the pet (e.g. an afghan or throw). And they LOVE them. Its my new go-to gift for animal lovers. In fact, I also just bought a bed for my sister-in-law's cat, and I'm told that the cat pets the bed when he lays on it. So, so adorable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dog and cat both love this bed!, September 12, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
We can hardly get our dog out of this bed during cold weather, she loves it so much.Last winter we had to unplug it during the day or our elderly cat literally wouldn't eat (he would rather sleep in his warm bed than eat!).Highly recommend this bed.

After one winter the heating pad didn't work anymore. The warranty is for one year, and we didn't try to use it again until the next winter so too late to get it taken care of.
