Good choice for birth-control in a monogamous relationship, July 25, 2010
This review is from: Ortho options vaginal contraceptive gel with applicators, unscented - 10 / Pack (Health and Beauty)
If you are looking for an alternative contraceptive method to condoms, sponges and birth-control pills, this may be a good choice for you. Hormone-free, this contraceptive gel is the same substance used on some condoms - it's a spermicide - killing the sperm cells on contact and providing a barrier to live sperm being able to get through the cervix.
Each packet contains one application. That means that if you have sex more than one time, you must insert one more application of this product prior to intercourse. The packaging states that you must insert each dose prior to sexual intercourse; having sex within 1 hour of insertion of the contraceptive gel. The process takes only about a minute to do, and can be done prior to foreplay.
The applicator itself comes with fairly poor instructions, however if you've ever used an applicator for yeast infection medicine, it's basically the same 'plunger-type' applicator. Remove the blue tip (it unscrews) and insert the plunger (has a button type top to it with the other end being very narrow) into the top (opposite end of where the blue tip was and insert it gently into the tube. Place the end of the tube that had been covered with the blue tip into your vagina until you feel it bump up against your cervix. Gently depress the plunger to extract the contraceptive gel, then gently remove the applicator. The gel is in, and you now have approximately 60 minutes in which you are 94% protected (if inserted correctly) from unwanted pregnancy.
Note this product does not protect you from STDs *(Sexually Transmitted Diseases). You can also use this product in combination with a condom for added protection. Do not douche for at least 8 hours following intercourse after using this product. You need to give it time to kill the sperm in your partner's ejaculate.
Overall my husband and I like this product very much. It's a good alternative to condoms in a monogamous, disease-free relationship. It does not drip, if inserted properly, but adds to natural lubrication.
One thought regarding oral sex and this product. It says on the box it is tasteless. Nothing about 'edible' though. Frankly, as it's a poison of sorts, I would find it difficult to encourage my partner to test it out.

great!, March 28, 2007
This review is from: Ortho options vaginal contraceptive gel with applicators, unscented - 10 / Pack (Health and Beauty)
initially i was a bit confused at what to do and how to operate it, but then i got it. you take the blue top off the first stick, then push that end inside you, and with the skinnier stick, you use that to push inside the bigger stick to push the stuff in you. if u don't comprehend my instructions i think you'll figure it out when you get it...i like this product and it's concept. its a substance you put in your genital to avoid pregnancy. the substance is like some type of thin goo. it makes the condom even more effective. i feel that this, with a condom is like being 100% safe...i've been searching hard for a contraceptive for my tastes. this has no side effects like the pill, no pushing a scary cloth or diaphagrm up you. this is simple and quick. i will be purchasing again.

So far so good, June 24, 2011
This review is from: Ortho options vaginal contraceptive gel with applicators, unscented - 10 / Pack (Health and Beauty)
After who knows how many years on hormonal birth control, I finally got fed up with all the unpleasant side effects and started looking into alternative contraceptive methods. I initially tried spermicidal suppositories but they were unbelievably messy and had to be put in 30+ minutes ahead of time to avoid causing my partner significant discomfort.
Thankfully, I've had a much better experience with Conceptrol. Inside the box there are 10 individually-packaged prefilled tubes of gel. The application process is pretty straightforward - you unscrew the cap, put the plunger into the tube, then stick the whole thing (gently) up your hooha as far as it will go and push the plunger to dispense the gel. The mouth of the applicator isn't tapered so it can be a little uncomfortable to insert, but it's no worse than a cheap tampon and with a little lubrication it's just fine.
One nice thing about this stuff is that it's not super runny so you don't have to worry so much about leakage. It's also supposed to be effective immediately after application, allowing for a little more spontaneity, which I definitely appreciate. The only real issue I've had is some weird discharge the next day, but it doesn't happen every time and there's no irritation so I'm not too worried about it.
I can't really speak to its efficacy as a contraceptive because I haven't been on it long enough to put that "94% effective" statistic to the test, but as far as everything else goes this is a great product. I'm glad to have found something that works for both my partner and myself.
