4.0 out of 5 stars Good choice for birth-control in a monogamous relationship, July 25, 2010
This review is from: Ortho options vaginal contraceptive gel with applicators, unscented - 10 / Pack (Health and Beauty)
If you are looking for an alternative contraceptive method to condoms, sponges and birth-control pills, this may be a good choice for you. Hormone-free, this contraceptive gel is the same substance used on some condoms - it's a spermicide - killing the sperm cells on contact and providing a barrier to live sperm being able to get through the cervix.

Each packet contains one application. That means that if you have sex more than one time, you must insert one more application of this product prior to intercourse. The packaging states that you must insert each dose prior to sexual intercourse; having sex within 1 hour of insertion of the contraceptive gel. The process takes only about a minute to do, and can be done prior to foreplay.

The applicator itself comes with fairly poor instructions, however if you've ever used an applicator for yeast infection medicine, it's basically the same 'plunger-type' applicator. Remove the blue tip (it unscrews) and insert the plunger (has a button type top to it with the other end being very narrow) into the top (opposite end of where the blue tip was and insert it gently into the tube. Place the end of the tube that had been covered with the blue tip into your vagina until you feel it bump up against your cervix. Gently depress the plunger to extract the contraceptive gel, then gently remove the applicator. The gel is in, and you now have approximately 60 minutes in which you are 94% protected (if inserted correctly) from unwanted pregnancy.

Note this product does not protect you from STDs *(Sexually Transmitted Diseases). You can also use this product in combination with a condom for added protection. Do not douche for at least 8 hours following intercourse after using this product. You need to give it time to kill the sperm in your partner's ejaculate.

Overall my husband and I like this product very much. It's a good alternative to condoms in a monogamous, disease-free relationship. It does not drip, if inserted properly, but adds to natural lubrication.

One thought regarding oral sex and this product. It says on the box it is tasteless. Nothing about 'edible' though. Frankly, as it's a poison of sorts, I would find it difficult to encourage my partner to test it out.

5.0 out of 5 stars great!, March 28, 2007

initially i was a bit confused at what to do and how to operate it, but then i got it. you take the blue top off the first stick, then push that end inside you, and with the skinnier stick, you use that to push inside the bigger stick to push the stuff in you. if u don't comprehend my instructions i think you'll figure it out when you get it...i like this product and it's concept. its a substance you put in your genital to avoid pregnancy. the substance is like some type of thin goo. it makes the condom even more effective. i feel that this, with a condom is like being 100% safe...i've been searching hard for a contraceptive for my tastes. this has no side effects like the pill, no pushing a scary cloth or diaphagrm up you. this is simple and quick. i will be purchasing again.

4.0 out of 5 stars So far so good, June 24, 2011
This review is from: Ortho options vaginal contraceptive gel with applicators, unscented - 10 / Pack (Health and Beauty)
After who knows how many years on hormonal birth control, I finally got fed up with all the unpleasant side effects and started looking into alternative contraceptive methods. I initially tried spermicidal suppositories but they were unbelievably messy and had to be put in 30+ minutes ahead of time to avoid causing my partner significant discomfort.

Thankfully, I've had a much better experience with Conceptrol. Inside the box there are 10 individually-packaged prefilled tubes of gel. The application process is pretty straightforward - you unscrew the cap, put the plunger into the tube, then stick the whole thing (gently) up your hooha as far as it will go and push the plunger to dispense the gel. The mouth of the applicator isn't tapered so it can be a little uncomfortable to insert, but it's no worse than a cheap tampon and with a little lubrication it's just fine.

One nice thing about this stuff is that it's not super runny so you don't have to worry so much about leakage. It's also supposed to be effective immediately after application, allowing for a little more spontaneity, which I definitely appreciate. The only real issue I've had is some weird discharge the next day, but it doesn't happen every time and there's no irritation so I'm not too worried about it.

I can't really speak to its efficacy as a contraceptive because I haven't been on it long enough to put that "94% effective" statistic to the test, but as far as everything else goes this is a great product. I'm glad to have found something that works for both my partner and myself.

4.0 out of 5 stars Adds to the Excitement!, May 30, 2011

This is a great contraceptive... I would purchase it again and again. As a male the feel of it was great as well, added more lubrication to the pleasure and a slight tingling feel. I thought my gf would have been pregnant when I traveled away but she wasn't when I called and asked.
Its easy to use and doesn't have any odor and the guy can easily insert it while performing foreplay.

One thing to note, for women it might cause a bit of rash or burning a day or so after using it. I would suggest washing up after using this product. Nevertheless its great!

4.0 out of 5 stars Works with diaphragm, May 6, 2010

Use this with a diaphragm. Works well, but it's a little inconvenient that it is in individual packages instead of a bigger tube. At least the applicators have lids, though. I use 1/2 a tube each time with a diaphragm.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect option for those who don't want to use hormonal birth control, July 20, 2011
This review is from: Ortho options vaginal contraceptive gel with applicators, unscented - 10 / Pack (Health and Beauty)
This gel is non-staining and unscented. It has worked great for us. It's pretty easy to use and also very quick. You can insert the gel and it works for up to one hour after application.
The only complaint that I have with this product is that it is slightly numbing. I don't notice during intercourse though and it doesn't affect my husband much, he said he barely noticed. Completely and totally worth it, we love this product and it is an important part of our contraceptive plan!

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful alternative to birth control pills, March 28, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Ortho options vaginal contraceptive gel with applicators, unscented - 10 / Pack (Health and Beauty)

I've tried many forms of birth control: condoms, the pill, rhythm method, gels and female condom/diaphragm. So far, this is the best form for me.

I'm not a fan of birth control pills because of the side effects. They reek HAVOC on a woman's body and I've heard too many horror stories to continue with this method (for instance the Yazmin debacle). I like Ortho Options as an alternative to pills because I don't have to worry about taking it everyday (I'm too forgetful) and it doesn't ruin the mood at all like condoms might, though I still use condoms from time to time.

I feel safe and confident using Ortho Options with my significant other. This is a great option for people in monogamous relationships who are fed up with other forms. I will definitely continue to use this product.
