Book Description

September 17, 2009
The wit and wisdom of Gilbert K. Chesterton continues to astonish new readers. Presented as his 'spiritual autobiography,' this monumental work shows just how clearly Mr. Chesterton anticipated future developments in philosophy as well as how Christianity would continue to resonate with individual seekers. Atheism, materialism, modernism... still lack the romance embodied in Christianity. This edition includes an index to help run down the memorable quotes you recall Chesterton said, but not where he said it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The value of an Index, November 16, 2009

This review is from: Orthodoxy (Paperback)
This inexpensive copy of Orthodoxy contains an index. As a self-directed, life-long learner, I appreciate the assistance that a good index gives. I was able to scan the scope of ideas that are covered, and to dip into topics that I found most interesting with ease. I can now use the book as a reference, quickly finding that one, little, elusive nugget that fits whatever I am writing or thinking. If you are a Chesterton lover, or are just starting to know his pithy, humorous, yet deeply provocative writing, you will also appreciate being able to put your finger on a specific thought without the headache of thumbing through or sifting through post it notes.

5.0 out of 5 stars As relevant today as when it was written a century ago, October 27, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Orthodoxy (Paperback)
Chesterton's 'Orthodoxy' is his spiritual autobiography and as such does not explain why any other person believes, but rather why HE believes. Still, important strands of thought are present that many readers (this one included) find compelling. This is in large part because many of the philosophies GK is responding to are ones present today. Writing in the early 1900s, it was in the midst of optimistic scientism and euphoric humanism, and not too far removed from Darwin and his Malthusian outlook. And, coming before the ravages of the 20th century- before Hitler's eugenics program and the communist purges made the consequences of such thinking obvious- Chesterton's condemnations, coming in hints and allusions as he traces his thinking, appear prophetic.

This particular edition was clean and crisp, with no extra commentary, for a pure Chesterton experience. (It does have an index at the end which some may find useful).

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read!, October 26, 2009

This review is from: Orthodoxy (Paperback)
This is a must read!! Chesterton's wisdom is timeless and just as relevant for us today as it was a century ago. Reading this book was eye-opening. His gift is thinking outside the proverbial box and deconstructing the faulty philosophies and worldviews of our time. The index in the back of this version is helpful for pinpointing specific quotes and ideas.
