Featuring abundant color illustrations and tables, this volume is a practical, easily referenced guide to diagnosing disorders of the musculoskeletal system. The book details the pathologic and radiographic characteristics of the entire spectrum of bone and joint diseases, including arthritis, metastatic bone disease, osteoporosis, trauma, osteomyelitis, primary bone tumors, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and trauma- and crystal-induced arthropathies. A section on soft-tissue pathology discusses meniscal injuries, bursa, ligaments, and tendons.Numerous original drawings throughout the book illustrate mechanisms of disease. Although primarily a diagnostic aid, the text also includes therapeutic suggestions. A glossary has been included to define specific orthopaedic disorders.

Review

Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), 11-FEB-09, Volume 301, Issue 6, Hue H. Luu, MD, Section of Orthopaedic Surgery, University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, Chicago, IL -- "This well-organized text on orthopedic pathology discusses topics ranging from metabolic bone disease to bone tumors. The text is comprehensive in that it has dedicated chapters for most orthopedic conditions, tumorous and nontumorous. While some existing orthopedic pathology texts focus primarily on musculoskeletal tumors, this text dedicates appropriate attention to important topics such as basic bone biology, metabolic bone diseases, orthopedic infections, and implant pathology. Although the text seems directed toward residents-in-training in orthopedics, pathology, and radiology, it can be a useful and worthwhile reference for practicing physicians in these respective fields. The organization allows for easy reference of any particular topic of interest. "One of the strengths of this book is that it provides ample attention to the pathophysiology of the disease process. It also includes excellent histological photomicrographs and corresponding radiographs that superbly demonstrate the correlation between pathology and radiology, as well as excellent photographs of autopsy specimens such as the spine of a patient with Pott disease or a femur with osteomyelitis... "The chapter on osteomyelitis and septic arthritis is outstanding. It provides an excellent description of the basic principles of these orthopedic infections and has subsections for common orthopedic infectious organisms. In addition to the common bacterial pathogens, the chapter discusses less common bacterial infections such as brucellosis as well as fungal infections. The schematic diagrams on the pathologic processes are simply excellent. "One of the most intriguing chapters is that on implant pathology. It provides an excellent description of common pathologies in common orthopedic implants. The chapter provides exceptional photographs of retrieval specimens as well as a first-rate table presenting the microscopic features of common orthopedic materials, their polarization features, and the typical cellular response to these particles. The section on prosthetic joint infections is truly outstanding, with pragmatic descriptions of frozen sections, biofilms, and joint cultures. "The appendix section is outstanding and includes useful tables on immunohistochemical markers, characteristic genetic aberrations in human tumors, and the classification of osteochondrodysplasias. Common bone and tissue grafts routinely used in orthopedics are discussed and reasonably presented. Likewise, a glossary at the end provides quick reference on a topic... "Overall, this excellent text provides a comprehensive overview of benign as well as malignant orthopedic pathologies. It should be in the reference libraries of residency training programs in orthopedics, pathology, and radiology. Without question, it is a useful reference for practicing physicians."-Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) --This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition.
