4.0 out of 5 stars Orthpaedic Primary Basic Sciences Exam recommended text (Australian), March 13, 2009

This review is from: Orthopaedic Basic Science (softcover) (Paperback)
Orthpaedic Primary Basic Sciences Exam recommended text (Australian).

I passed using this text, Last's 10th & 11th Editions and Robbins Pathology. There were (10/200) questions MRI/WBBS which I had not covered.

The chapters covered are in line with the syllabus. However, this book should be read in conjunction with an Orthopaedic Pathology text, as there is no section on basic pathology. Robbins was inadequate for the tumour (30/200) questions and basic orthopaedic pathology questions (50/200).

This Edition has been revised and is considerably shorter (by 300 pages) compared to the previous Edition. Subsequently, significant portions of sections have been omitted. Examples include: significantly less detail on biomaterials, especially bone cement; and a shortened biomechanics section. These sections were adequate for the OPBS exam, but would be inadequate for the FRACS (Ortho) Fellowship Exam.

No section can be skipped in preparing for this exam. I would recommend reading biomechanics, biomaterials and the bone & cartilage chapters twice. Also, a high proportion of the questions came from tables.

The Australian Orthopaedic Association has re-written 570 questions this year (2009) for the two exams. This means that the chances of repeat questions is close to zero. I counted four repeat questions in the 200 that we were presented with for the Feb 2009 exam. As the exam shall be held twice (2009), once (2010), twice (2011) etc, the chances of repeat questions (if you are unlucky enough to have to sit it again), is low.
