Editorial Reviews

From the Artist

"Two pianists improvising together is a great challenge, and in these performances with Stefano, inspirational and great fun. There were no rehearsals for these performances - only a choice of songs to use. The freely improvised segments were spontaneous and not at all pre-arranged. Orvieto was winter-cold. The experience was summer-warm."-- Chick Corea

Product Description

Chick Corea and Stefano Bollani, both stars of their instruments for their generations, combine their considerable talents for this first recorded collaboration, a document of a most spirited gig in Orvieto's Teatro Mancinelli last December. Effervescent virtuosity abounds as the two piano genii romp through a program that includes Jobim and Buarque's "Portrait in Black and White", the swing ballad "Darn That Dream", Fats Waller's "Jitterbug Waltz", Miles Davis's "Nardis", blues, improvisations and more. And this recording is Corea's first new ECM date in more than a quarter-century.

5.0 out of 5 stars Corea and Bollani live at Umbria Jazz Winter 2010 October 8, 2011
By A. Zona
Format:Audio CD
Chick Corea (b. 1941) and Stefano Bollani (b. 1972), the master and the new talent, the American of Sicilian and Spanish descent on one piano, the Italian from Tuscany on the other piano, recorded live in concert at Umbria Jazz Winter in Orvieto, on December 30, 2010.

A travel into jazz in 75 minutes, from free improvised moments to well-know standards, from original compositions to the blues. Excluding two free improvisations (Orvieto Improvisation N.1 and Orvieto Improvisation N.2) that work as introductory pieces, tempi are mostly fast. Still, there is a sort of laidback approach, with the music coming out very naturally, without any apparent effort. Both pianists have huge technical abilities, yet their virtuosity is here always focused to just one goal, produce beautiful, lyrical, stylish and sophisticated as well as entertaining music, and never as a show off to impress the listener. If you are after special effects and keyboards on fire, you will be disappointed. If you are after jazz piano music to discover and enjoy more and more at every listening session, then this work should definitely deserve your attention.

The recording quality is excellent as usual from ECM. Not only the two pianos, but all noises during the concert were recorded as well. The first time I was listening this CD on my hi-fi system at a realistic volume I was thinking someone was punching the floor of my apartment from downstairs... luckily that was just the pianists stomping their feet on the stage. Impressing indeed.

Beautifully recorded and great music from technical piano as well as harmonic/jazz perspectives. It's a bit like "mensa ragtime" in places.

4.0 out of 5 stars In tandem they play February 3, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Chick and Stefano enjoy riding a tandem bicycle. They are enjoying a passing moment of their first encounter. Their faces are filled with excitements. Familiar urban scenery passes over them. They fail to come up to our expectations, If we expect two different personalities competing each other, like most of other duo performances. Their sounds are very close and uneasy to distinguish. They control the bicycle in perfect harmony like real farther and son. Stefano confesses growing up by digesting all Chick's play and learned much from him. Chick paternally watches Stefano's every stepps and supports him by emphasizing the flavor. They become one player with four hands when they perform. Stefano confirmed having this same feeling when he played with Chick in the postscript.
My recommended songs are Jitterbug Waltz, Nardis and Chick's iron tune Armando's Rhumba.

4.0 out of 5 stars One and one make one October 28, 2011
Format:Audio CD
Really enjoyable, easy and relaxed for something as clever and remarkably synced. That said there were a couple of points where it brought a smile - at peak moments Chick and Stefano sound remarkably like an Oscar Peterson solo in full flights!

3.0 out of 5 stars Chick with Bollani October 20, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The skills of the artists are wonderful. However, this album lacks real excitement.
Given the mood of the listener, this could be a great effort or just new music from Chick.
