About the Brand

Orville Redenbacher's namesake product comes in a variety of styles, including microwave, old-fashioned kernal, and pre-popped snacks |
Orville Redenbacher, born in 1907 on a small farm in Indiana, got an early start in the popcorn business. As a kid, he earned his spending money popping and selling popcorn he grew on the family farm. Orville spent more than 60 years developing a corn hybrid unlike any other. He created and tested more than 40,000 varieties, until he found the one that popped up light, fluffy, and tasty enough to meet his standards. They are the same standards that have made Orville Redenbacher's Gourmet Popping Corn the favorite of so many families today.
In 1970, Orville started his popcorn company, naming it the Redbow Popcorn Company, and a year later, Orville Redenbacher's Gourmet Popping Corn was born. In 1976, Orville sold his company to Hunt-Wesson, but continued to act as the company's spokesperson in TV ads. Hunt-Wesson launched Orville Redenbacher's shelf-stable microwave popcorn in 1983. ConAgra Foods bought Hunt-Wesson and acquired the Orville Redenbacher's brand in 1990.
Orville passed away in 1995, but his namesake brand remains number one brand in the U.S.
Orville Redenbacher's Standards
"We grow and harvest our own corn with the highest quality standards. We also use special corn-harvesting machines, which reduces potential bruising to the kernels. After harvesting Orville's unique hybrid, the corn is slowly conditioned by drying it just enough so that each kernel reaches the optimum moisture level. Following the drying process, the kernels are carefully sifted three times and those that are too small or too light are rejected. Only acceptable kernels go onto the polisher and then the popcorn is sealed in jars or microwave packages for freshness."
