The roots of a Brazilian jazz legend,
By DJ Joe Sixpack (...in Middle America) - See all my reviews (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER)
This review is from: Os Primieros Anos (Viva a Brotolāndia - 1961 / Poema de Amor - 1962) (Audio CD)
This 2-CD set includes straight reissues of the first two albums by Brazilian jazz legend Elis Regina, "Viva A Brotolandia" (1961) and "Poema De Amor," from 1962. Recording for the Continental record label, Elis was miscast as a "brota," or teen pop singer, ala Annette Funicello or Connie Francis... Even on her second album, where things got a little jazzier, she was still in a pretty square setting, singing old-fashioned ballads and boleros... A switch the next year over to CBS brought more of the same, and it wasn't until 1965, when she signed with Philips that the great bossa-and-jazz diva began to emerge. These early recordings, made when she was still a teenager, are still pretty remarkable, and fans will want to check them out. Nice that they are finally available again, after several decades out of print! (DJ Joe Sixpack)
