Right off the bat, let me say that I'm not a serious musician. I played horn instruments in public school many years ago, but have never played a string instrument. While on vacation in Hawaii last summer, I decided to buy a $15 ukulele at the ABC Store and goof around with it as a short-term hobby. I used some online resources to get started, and taught myself a bunch of chords. I download guitar chords to popular songs from the internet and play them for stress release while I'm studying. I have no rhythm, and no developed method whatsoever - I would probably improve dramatically from one half-hour session with a real instructor!

But after spending a great deal of time strumming the ABC Special, it became apparent that the thing would never be put into proper tune. What did I expect for $15? I even took the darn thing apart, cut the fretboard in various places, and re-glued it in an attempt to just get a consistent sound of out it. I eventually gave up, and realizing that I had enough interest to justify the expense, I invested in this ukulele through Amazon. It was the best package deal I could find and the best-rated ukulele for my price range. I also took the opportunity to trade up from the soprano size, since my larger fingers were having great difficulty playing the chords on the smaller fretboard.

I couldn't be happier with the purchase. The difference from the $15 ABC Model was instantly apparent: The warm sounds that come from this concert uke are worth every penny I spent. It makes even a hack like me sound better! In the right hands, I am sure this would make extraordinary music! It is a BEAUTIFUL instrument.

I've been playing guitar for 20 years and in the last year or so, started playing with ukulele. I got a Takamine concert with a solid top, sides and bottom and it sounded ok at best, even with Ko'olau gold strings.

My daughter started getting more serious about the ukulele, so I decided to get her one - this one. It looked good, got good reviews, but I wasn't expecting much for a laminate. I was so wrong.

The ukulele came in today. A few strums, even out of tune and I knew I would be keeping this one. It comes with Aquila strings and they sound fantastic. I had Aquilas on the Takamine and they never sounded as good as on the OU5 Oscar. I will wait a little while to get some Ko'olau golds, which I find to be superior in tone and resonance than the Aquila.

The tone is much richer with a greater sustain and projection than the Takamine. It's actually so different that the Takamine sounds like a toy ukulele now. The construction is fantastic. No runs, no odd fittings, it's very well made. This was an excellent purchase for the price, even if it was only for the ukulele, but there's more.

The hard case is actually incredibly nice and I am so glad I spent the extra dollars for the hard case. It's rip stop nylon on the outside, with a big pocket and a good zipper. Inside is just like a quality guitar case, lined with the fuzzt veloury material and it even has a gear pocket. Its a hard foam, so even some serious drops will protect your uku. It's not a $50 case but way better than a soft sided gear bag. For the money, the case was another shocker in quality.

The tuner it came with is a Yamaha GCT1 piezo tuner. So you have to pluck, adjust, mute and then repeat.

Not just a wonderful instrument, it is a wonderful instrument regardless of price. I owned a classic Martin Uke which was worth $700, and this Uke plays every bit as good if not better than the Martin. I have always been a fan of Oscar Schmidt instruments and this Uke has the very same high quality I have come to expect. A++++++

Let's get the small stuff out of the way. The tuner and the polishing cloth are functional. The case is very nice and is better than average. Now to the main reason you should buy this package...the uke.
The OU 5 is a great entry/beginners level instrument for not a whole lot of money. If you are like me and want to learn to play the uke you can't go wrong. It has great tone, top of the line strings and it has a very good looking finish right out of the box. My instructor who is a luthier who hand crafts ukulele costing at least 10 times what you would pay for this uke was actually impressed with the OU5.
I thought in my hands it sounded pretty good but in his hands it was amazing. Hearing him play my uke made me want to become a better player and I think that is saying a lot. He suggested some minor set-up adjustments but recommended that I should wait until I broke a string. At that point we'll adjust the action, add new strings and I will be good to go. The strings I'm using now are still the originals and I've been playing it everyday since the first of the year. I personally think that's really good. Btw...the Grover tuners really keep it in tune. After a couple of weeks in my environment I sometimes can go for a couple of days without retuning and for a uke this is fabulous.
I know that there's better ukes available for a lot more money but I will say this. For less around $150 bucks you CANNOT go wrong.
