5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent caliper, excellent value
I have wanted a good-quality caliper for a long time, and just received this as a gift. The unit is made of stainless steel, has tight tolerances, and appears to be pretty accurate. Others in this price range are commonly of the digital type -- not that I dislike them, but the quality isn't there unless you spend an additional $50 - $75. For the money, this is the nicest...

I was really looking forward to getting these calipers, because I really liked the design of the dial. Still do actually.

Unfortunately, the rough operation and the fact that it wouldn't hold zero even ONCE in a row meant that I had to return it.

Problem list:

1. Poor machining leading to rough rack & pinion engagement.
2. A "gravelly" sensation while operating.
3. The sensation of a "hump" that the gear needed to get over as calipers were opened.
4. Operation: Close caliper & zero. Open and measure item. Remove item and return jaws to starting point. At this time the needle should be pointing exactly at the spot you "zeroed" it to originally. Unfortunately, no matter how many times I operated it and went through the procedure, the needle never returned to zero.

I'm afraid that I will have to give this tool a single star. I still like the design, but a measuring device is supposed to accurately measure. Aesthetics are supposed to be a bonus, not a sole redeeming value.

I blame myself really. I should stop being a cheapskate and just buy a Starrett.

I purchased this item because I am tired of using a caliper to measure something then having to convert the results from decimal to a fraction. I also wanted a non-digital caliper because every time I use a digital caliper the battery seems to be dead when I need it.

This has a scale showing fractions of an inch in 64ths which is close enough for me. It also shows the usual decimal scales we have seen before. It is made of stainless steel so it won't rust and it appears to be well made. The scales are easy to read.

You can zero the tool by loosening a thumb screw and turning the scale. Tightening the thumb screw again keeps your adjustment from moving. The tension on the moving head as you take a measurement is adjusted with a different thumb screw. You can tighten it a little to make the movement a little stiffer as you take a measurement or you can tighten the thumb screw a lot so a measurement you have set will not change.

If you buy this tool I doubt you will be disappointed.

I like the accuracy of this product. It has a variety of functions such as depth gauge, inside measurements, outside measurements. The dial is easy to read, calibrated in 64ths of an inch. I do a lot of wood turning and this caliper makes my work more accurate. It is truly a fine tool. It locks in position making assuring accuracy in use.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to read and simple to use., July 14, 2008
This review is from: Oshlun MTDCF-06 6-Inch Stainless Steel Fractional Dial Caliper (Tools & Home Improvement)
Very nicely machined. It moves and holds its position very nicely. Easy to read dial; easy to read numbers. The fractional numbering on the outside of the dial, which makes the fractions easier to see. The decimal scale on the inside of dial is more natural to look at and the smaller size is not a problem to read. Other more expensive fractional calipers I have seen are much harder to read. Very nice for the price.

2.0 out of 5 stars Kind of cheap, but the price is good, and works OK, June 19, 2009

Kind of cheap, but for $20, what do you expect? Works OK, but there is a brass piece that seems to slide out quite a bit if you try to measure too fast. I wouldn't recommend this if you were going to use it a lot, but for the hobbyist (who likes dial calipers better), it's not a bad thing to have.

Caliper was delivered quickly. Yea! It is easy to read and use. I like it because it has a classic dial on it (as opposed to new digital ones). I don't really need the fractions on the dial but it is convienent for me when I need a quick and dirty measurement. (its not really that dirty ;) I have to admit that it gets me a little respect to have it at work. ( I am a female engineer and I think the men here think it is cool I have one.)

The dial is very easy to read. It is not as smooth to operate as I was hoping, but for the price it is decent. I would put it on the same level of quality as those found at Harbor Freight.
