Gr 6-8--Two novelizations of classic myths. In Isis, set 2000 years ago, twins Taous and Thaues are rescued from poverty by an Egyptian priest, with the hope that they will play the parts of Isis and her sister Nephthys in a re-enactment of the burial of Osiris. To prepare them for their roles, the priest teaches them about Isis, her marriage to her brother Osiris, and Osiris's murder by his jealous brother Seth. In Land of the Five Suns, Stone Turtle uses Creation myths and tales of Aztec gods to distract his younger brother, Two Rabbit Leaping Frog, in order to keep him out of trouble. The narrator also explains the origins of music, corn, and chocolate. This story is set in the early 1500s, just as Spaniards and Aztecs were encountering one another for the first time. Both titles have attractive, full-color photos of artwork and artifacts originating from each culture. Unfortunately, it is difficult to tell the original stories from the myths, a flaw that is sure to confuse or mislead children.
