If Kandinsky made movies they probably would be about this beautiful. If you like something different, beautiful and inspiring, this might be just the dvd for you. I've been known to travel great distances to see Oskar Fischinger's work and have never been disappointed. If you already know this work and just wonder if you should buy this dvd-YES! Buy it-there are wonderful reproductions of paintings that you probably haven't seen-even on the Japanese laser disc. This is GREAT ART in that it makes me see the world differently, challenges me to work towards creating more beauty, makes me ask, how did he do that? How did he even thing to do that?

If you're still not sure, google "Oskar Fischinger" and look at the images you find. When you're ready to see those fantastic colors and shapes pulsing on your tv, buy this dvd. You'll be glad you did.

If you've ever seen Fantasia, that's probably the closest touchpoint for Fischinger's work- the first part, the mostly abstract one, was something he worked on. These are like that, but more pure (Disney insisted on a number of concrete elements like clouds and things that distract from the flow of the music and images) and more inventive.

The work is animation or painting or stop motion, set to classical or popular music of the period. It ranges from quick, fun pieces like like Study no 7, which is three minutes long and all quick-popping squiggles and lines set to Brahm's Hungarian Dance, to something like Motion Painting, which is almost a new art form altogether- 10 minutes long, it is a painting that keeps growing and evolving along with the music, not really animation so much as a three dimensional painting in which the third dimension is time.

Fischinger's work is difficult to put into words, but very worth investigating if you have any curiosity about it at all.
