The Fabulous Osmonds!,

This review is from: The Osmonds Live in Las Vegas 50th Anniversary 2 DVD Collector's Edition (DVD)
[ASIN:B0014DC8WK The Osmonds Live in Las Vegas 50th Anniversary 2 DVD Collector's Edition]]
I purchased The Osmonds Live in Las Vegas 50th Anniversary 2 DVD collector's edition and I thoroughly enjoyed watching it. It certainly brought back a lot of memories for me when I was just a young kid listening to the Osmonds many albums or watching the Donny and Marie shows. It was delightful to see all the siblings performing on one stage. I have purchased many of the Osmonds' concerts on DVD but I never had the pleasure of seeing them all performing together , not even when they came to Singapore for a concert in 1980. That year Merrill suffered a heart attack and couldn't join his siblings for the tour. The Osmonds are coming to Singapore again this year for their 50th reunion and I am going to see them again and this time Merrill is coming too!!! YUPPEE!!! Okay. I know I am getting too excited but how can I not?!! This is a must get_must see-must keep DVD. In fact, my sister who is also an Osmond fan saw this DVD and loved it so much and I, in keeping with that sentiment felt she just had to keep the DVD, so I gave that to her and I am purchasing another one for myself. So...I am recommending that for a recurring fun filled adventure of family fun, music, warmth, and love, get this DVD, no regrets!!!!

For the sheer, simple pleasure of watching the seven performing members of the Osmond family reunite on stage for the first time in over 25 years, this dvd set is worth owning. The real on-stage reunion is between Donny and the original quartet of Alan, Wayne, Merrill, and Jay, the five of whom have not performed together as The Osmond Brothers since the early '80s (although various combinations of the brothers, including youngest brother Jimmy, continued performing together throughout the '80s, '90s, and 2000's). The seven siblings, including sister Marie, appear to be truly having a party, despite the ocassional misstep or flubbed lyric. It is especially gratifying to see Alan back on stage, sometimes playing piano, sometimes singing out fron with his family (for health-related reasons, he retired from perfoming ten years ago). Vocally, the siblings are in top form, their voices having gained texture and richness with maturity since their '70s heyday--individually, each voice is distinctive and pure, but as with most family groups, it is their multi-part harmonizing which really catches the ear. Their signature concert closers, "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" and the spine-tingling, gospel-tinged "Are You Up There/I Believe" (on Disc 2), in which they are joined on-stage by hearing-impaired oldest brothers, Virl and Tom (who perfom their parts by signing the lyrics), are particularly moving.
Disc 1 features the special which aired on PBS, plus interviews inserted between songs that lend historical perspective and serve as introductions to songs that immediately follow. The brothers' recollections of "Osmondmania", and the accompanying archival footage, might be startling to viewers who either don't remember or were simply unaware of the massive impact this family had on pop culture in the '70s. Interviews with longtime friend and mentor Andy Williams are included, along with snippets from The Andy Williams Show, on which the Brothers appeared regularly throughout the '60s. Many of the family's biggest hits are performed, at least in part, most memorably the full-bodied, warmly delivered "Love Me for a Reason", and the energetic, almost cultish favorite, "Crazy Horses". On Disc 2, bonus performances are added in piecemeal fashion, including several hits from the original quartet's and Marie's quite successful forays into country music during the '80s. And lest we forget that heartthrob Donny is a well-established entertainer in his own right, Disc 2 includes attention-grabbing solo performances of "Breeze on By" and "Will It Go Round in Circles". It is true that these performances are edited and arranged out-of-sequence, so the feel of a full concert is missing (for that I highly recommend the Brothers 2006 Live in London concert dvd). I would've liked fuller treatment of a few songs, as well as anything that would've highlighted the brothers' skills as musicians, but overall, this 2-disc set presents a fairly comprehensive overview of the family's 50-year career. The warmth which exists between the Osmonds and their enthusiastic, loyal audience is palpable--that their fans know every lyric and dance move says a lot about the endurance of this family's music and popularity. The packaging is bare bones (the menu on the back cover does not even mention the interviews, and there is no insert). I don't have a fine enough ear to detect any major shortcomings in sound quality, and whatever there are didn't detract from my enjoyment of the program.

This review is from: The Osmonds - Live in Las Vegas 50th Anniversary Reunion Concert (DVD)
The person who reviewed this DVD is, I think, confusing it with the DVD that the Osmond fan club released of the reunion. That DVD is primarily about the fan reunion and the "Meet & Greet" and only shows bits of songs. This DVD that will be released in April is the concert (and is different than the DVD that PBS will be offering in conjunction with broadcasting the concert during pledge week). I saw portions of this new concert video this past weekend (at an Osmond gathering in Las Vegas) and it is, in fact, full songs and is very, very well done, which is why I'm giving it 5 stars. I look forward to seeing the entire DVD!

This is a review of the actual single-disc 50th Anniversary Reunion Concert released on April 1, 2008. I'm surprised that people posted reviews and criticized other reviewers for being wrong when they hadn't even seen the final product.
For the record: The person the other reviewers said got it wrong was actually RIGHT, this is a TERRIBLE DVD where most songs are featured as highlights, with sudden cuts to interviews with the Osmonds and Andy Williams. As much as I appreciated seeing how the Osmonds look and sound in the present day, I really was looking forward to seeing a full concert, not this patch up job. I mean, "One Bad Apple" was almost completely butchered. Very, very bad. The picture is decent in anamorphic wide screen, the audio is only DD 2.0. There seemed to be a problem with the mikes initially - their voices are mostly drowned out during the first two songs. This reunion event really deserved a much better DVD treatment than this. I'm now ordering the 2-Disc version, although I have a feeling it'll be the same first disc with the butchered versions of the songs and a second disc with stand alone concert highlights not featured in the first one. Hopefully I'm wrong.

I already had the PBS version, and I KNEW there had to be more songs that were not on the PBS version. To my delight, there were many more on this 2 DVD edition. I also loved the format - interviews with the Osmonds and with Andy Williams as intros to some of the songs. The Osmonds are better than ever. Their voices and harmony are richer and fuller now than when they were younger, and I hope they will do more recording in the future. I am certainly an even greater fan than before.

I love it!! I have been a huge fan of the Osmonds since I was about 5 years old and I'm nearly 44!! It brings back such great memories of my childhood. The Osmonds are such a wonderful, talented family and I think it's soooooo cool that after 50 years they still perform together. The DVD showed the concert with clips inserted of each of the family members talking about their lives together. Andy Williams was even included to wish them well on their 50th anniversary. It's a great DVD and I highly recommend it!!

I am an admitted Osmond fan, and as a reporter, I have met every member of the Osmond family. So it was wonderful to get to "visit" with them on the 2-disc DVD. I do believe these DVD's give a good representation of the family, their talent, their genuine close-knit family ties. I like the variety of the different combinations of performances. I appreciated that we got to see the non-performing brothers, Virl and Tom, who happen to be my favorite Osmonds. What more can I say than: watching the Osmond 50th Anniversary DVD's made me happy?!

50th Anniversary 2DVD Collection is a must have,

This review is from: The Osmonds Live in Las Vegas 50th Anniversary 2 DVD Collector's Edition (DVD)
The 2 DVD collection is a must have if you're an Osmond-fan. The 1st DVD is a nice flow of the actual 50th Anniversary show at the Orleans....and includes behind the scene, one-on-one interviews with each sibling edited in between songs. I kind of wish this is what we saw on PBS as I think that the sales would have gone through the roof. However--I'm telling you now....get this DVD.
DVD #2 is a bonus track with songs they performed that were shown on the PBS special, but were not put into the 1st DVD. It includes their less popular hits....and shows their diversity as entertainers. Nice job Osmonds. Thanks for coming together to make this DVD a possiblity. I wasn't in Vegas...but this is certainly a great addition to my Osmond collection/memorabilia. |
