I was skeptical if it would work, but sure enough, the Osprey Exos 46 (size Large) worked very well as a carryon pack for a recent trip to Europe and Asia. It is actually to long (according to airline specifications for a carryon bag), but I was never questioned about its size. In fact, some of the crew commented on how they wish they had one!

I didn't overstuff the pack, and cinched down well, but I was able to fit all of my clothes and equipment into this thing, with plenty of room to spare (note: I washed clothes half way through my week long trip).

It was also useful to take off the top pocket of the bag and use as a "personal item" on the plane, so that I could keep books, water, snacks, and headphones with me during the flights. I also attached a shoulder strap to this pocket and used it for a daypack during my trip, leaving the main pack where I was staying.

The pack was super light, and durable (even with the smaller straps!). Would recommend highly!

This backpack is lightweight and easy to carry & has plenty of extra storage pockets & places to fasten carabiners. I have taken it on Amtrak for week long trips around the US and it is easy to walk around with and perfectly fits the carry on size restrictions. I also took it for a 48 mile hike (4/5 days) on the Appalachian Trail - it fit all my clothes, a cooking pot & stove, a 3L water bladder, food for the entire trip, my sleeping bag & mat and I had places to secure some tent poles for my group in the side straps. Granted, I went a little over the listed maximum weight for the backpack, but it held up fantastically. Covered it with a garbage bag during a rainy day on the hike & it managed to keep the outside of the pack dry as well (used dry sacks for all my inside items). The straps around the chest aren't unbearable for women & along with the hip straps help balance the weight better when walking/hiking for long periods of time. One year of ownership and no problems yet! Plus, it comes with a lifetime warranty from the company - can't beat that. Great backpack!

I dropped (sold) my old much larger backpack less than a year ago and I've never looked back. This Osprey® pack is fantastic in every way. First off, because of it's small capacity (my choice), I am forced to be smart about everything I take with me. I don't want to carry the kitchen sink anymore. :) Second, the straps on it are perfect for everything I want to take. I am annoyed that almost every backpack uses straps that could easily hold an elephant. This one doesn't have unnecessary straps, and they are just the right size (width). Third, I love the "Air Speed" feature. Just when I was feeling hot, a breeze would blow across my back because the fabric on this pack is not against me; it is held away from my back just enough to allow very comfortable air movement across my back. Fourth, Osprey® guarantees their packs for as long as you own the pack. If anything happens to it, they will repair/replace it.

SIDE NOTE: Empty, this pack weighs about 2.31 lbs. If you put a three liter water bladder in it, the water alone will weigh 6.6 lbs, triple the weight of the empty pack. That's how light this pack is. Your full Nalgene® Everyday(tm) 1L water bottle weighs MORE than this pack when empty. Don't be afraid to buy it; this pack is not fragile in any way.

If you are shopping for a lightweight pack that is great for light to ultralight long range hiking applications (and anything up to that), and still is comfy and durable and just large enough, this is a great option.

At about 2 pounds (I removed a few of the straps and pockets I felt were not 100% necessary), it is lighter than most other packs in the same size range. It easily fits all required gear for an easy overnight. It will handle short technical/cold mountain trips, and long endurance thru-hikes. The only thing I can think of that I would want a larger pack for would be a major mountain expedition/highly technical climb, or maybe a parent carrying a families worth of gear. It is also a bit large for trail runs, but it covers about 90% of my trips. I bought this just over a year ago and have used it perhaps 30-40 days, from easy to long dayhikes to multiday snow on moderate mountains (like Hood and the North Cascades). On dayhikes it easily fits all my SLR camera gear as well. There has yet to be any significant wear and tear.

The side mesh pockets are larger than most and do a much better job of holding gear than other packs I have used, preventing the common escape of nalgenes while jogging downhill. It has an ice ax loop, although only one so a second ice tool can be annoying to attach. It fits well to my fairly standard body size (6 feet 175).

I usually only review objects I really like or really dislike... and this pack clearly falls into the "really like" category.

If you are looking for a great lightweight pack in the size range for most hikes, this is a great option.

What I would use this for: Dayhiking, Easy backpacking, hard backpacking, easy mountains, moderate mountains.

What I would not use this for: Denali, Everest, or similar. Or for those of you that are fans of the big/slow/extra-comfortable trip.
