If you want a waterproof bag you will need to buy a paddlers bag or a marine overboard bag.
Nomadic Family
Also, if the rest of the pack comes in contact with the rain, it will absorb the water and add considerable weight to the whole load.
J.B
The load is comfortable and stable over very rough terrain and well distributed when you make the adjustment to the straps.

Yep! Really! 5 months trekking in Scotland with a family of 5, youngest child being only 5. We trekked 840 miles and and accomplished over 59,000 feet of assent throughout the trip. I used the Osprey Argon 85 Backpack, my wife used the Osprey Women's Xenon 85 Backpack and our children used the Imp 23, Osprey Jib 35 Mountaineering Backpack and Osprey Ace 48 Mountaineering Backpack. We started the trip in late April and ended in October. This review could almost be a book if time permitted but I will boil it down to the meat.

First off, the "Water issue": Wait a minute, there is no water issue! If you want a waterproof bag you will need to buy a paddlers bag or a marine overboard bag. If you want to shed heavy rain get a Sea to Summit SN240 Ultra-Light Siliconized Cordura Pack Cover or Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil Tarp - Poncho designed to go over the pack too (so that the rain does not run off your hat and down between the pack and your back, which will soak you and your gear), for light rain get a standard backpack cover.

The more time you spend being negative and not looking for the lesson, you can be sure to have an unfavorable trip.

I use this pack for my two week excursions in the backcountry of Yosemite. I take my 6 year old son so I need to carry most of the gear and food. Yosemite means bears and bears mean bear cans. Bear cans mean weight. So does 12 days of food for two people. My pack load quickly hits over 70 pounds when you add a few liters of water. I'm 5'7" so carrying a load like this can be a nightmare; this pack makes it as easy as it can be. The load is comfortable and stable over very rough terrain and well distributed when you make the adjustment to the straps. The hip belt is phenomenal, detachable, and replaceable if needed - it comes with the pack BTW. You can take the belt into a dealer like REI to get it molded to your body. I did not do this but I can't imagine it fitting better. I have had the pack for over two years now and it's as good as the day I got it. When heavily rained on I use a pack cover that keeps out the wetness. The pack itself, without the cover, keeps out the light drizzle. When the pack took a quick involuntary dip into fast moving stream it dried out quickly and without issue. The detachable top that converts into a small day pack, or large fanny pack, was very useful. This pack is a dependable joy and I would replace it as quick as I could if it was stolen or eaten by bears.

I bought this backpack about two years ago for our trip to Switzerland. I have a day pack for weekend backpacking trips, but I needed something more comfortable for moving around in Europe. This backpack is very comfortable and had the right fitting and customized hip belt. I would highly recommend this backpack. I have not used this backpack for any weekend trips, but hopefully I will sometime in the future.

I have enjoyed using this backpack on my motorcycle for long trips that require more than a little packing that won't fit into the saddle bags. It's roomy but still very easy to put on and move about with. It supports well on the hips thank to the waist strap and curved back supports. My only gripe is that the waist belt is only secured by a flap on the inside of the backpack which has a tendency to come apart when picking up or setting down the backpack at heavy load. A Velcro attachment or some kind of mechanism to keep it in place would have been greatly appreciated.
