Product Description

Providing customized fit and heavy load-hauling capability, the Osprey Argon 85 is an ideal companion for extended backpacking trips. Multiple convenient access points, innovative features and 5100 cubic inches of storage capacity equip the Argon 85 for backcountry adventure. Constantly striving to enhance comfort and performance, Osprey has equipped the Argon 85 with a ground-breaking suspension system. An HDPE framesheet with a single lightweight aluminum stay works in tandem with two aluminum ReCurve rods to grant strength and stability to the Argon 85. This design ensures your balance by effectively distributing weight. Osprey's foam AirScape backpanel and dual density foam harness with strategic soft cutouts maximize comfort and help to reduce heat build-up between your back and the pack. Further enhancing fit, the revolutionary BioForm CM A/X hipbelt utilizes an ErgoPull closure that draws tension along the top and the bottom of the belt with split support wings. A sliding sternum strap and load-lifter straps allow you to fine-tune fit with on-the-go adjustments. Each of three available sizes of the Argon 85 offers torso adjustability. The MD accommodates torso lengths ranging from 18"-20.5", the LG accommodates torso lengths ranging from 20"-22.5" and the XL is designed for torso lengths that exceed 22". To guarantee that the Argon 85 fits like a glove, Osprey offers swappable BioForm hipbelts and shoulder harnesses. The SM hipbelt fits waists ranging from 27"-31", the MD hipbelt fits waists ranging from 30"-34", the LG hipbelt fits waists ranging from 33"-37" and the XL hipbelt is designed for waists larger than 36". For most backpackers, the shoulder harness size should match the pack size, but for those with wider or narrower shoulders, additional sizes are available. The Argon 85's BioForm harness is available in SM, MD, LG and XL sizes. Each size provides a vertical adjustability of 2"-3". The main packbag of the Argon 85 is designed to comfortably

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality Design as Expected From Argon, February 13, 2011
This review is from: Osprey Argon 85 Internal Frame Backpack - In Your Choice of Styles (Misc.)
I just got back from a seven day trip on Mount Rainier in Washington. I started with a 55 lb load and was TOTALLY IMPRESSED by this pack's performance. If carrying heavy loads over long hikes is what you do, then this pack won't disappoint. The suspension on the Argon has a level of adjustability that eliminated my usual pressure points. After a day of dialing it in, it became an extension of my body: very helpful when walking narrow game trails on scree fields. I also noted that there was no "internal frame sag syndrome" regardless of the terrain. My only wish? An external pocket on the belt.

Other features I loved:

1. The removable lid and hydration sleeve were great for day hikes out of base.

2. Lots of compression straps for tightening up your load

3. The WARRANTY is hands down the best on the market; if you break it, Osprey will fix it, no matter what!

Potential Cons:

1. Make no mistake, this is a heavy pack. If you're a fast and light, gram conscious hiker, this is NOT the pack for you.

2. no pockets on the hit belt.

All in all, this is the best expedition pack I have ever used, providing unmatched load bearing capability and comfort.

As always, fit is key, so be sure to get measured up properly. Happy Backpacking!

4.0 out of 5 stars Lots to like about this pack, October 15, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I'm a dad who will no doubt be carrying a lot of extra stuff when the little ones come along for the hike, so I got this pack with that in mind. This isn't for the minimalist by any means, as it is roomy, feature laden and weighs 6.5 pounds before you put anything in it, although it has enough cinch points, straps etc. to keep a minimal load packed down nicely.

Some things to be aware of -- the heat molded belt is really a nice, comfortable feature, but it can make it tough to lean the pack against anything so that you can get in the main compartment with the bag standing up.

-- The pack is tall, and you'll really have to play with the adjustments to avoid banging your head against the top.

-- The left side pocket is zippered, making it inaccessible with the pack on. I haven't found a valuable use for this, yet, but the Osprey folks are pretty smart so I'm sure I just haven't discovered it, yet.

-- The Argon doesn't have the stow-on-the-go trekking pole holder found on the Aether. Not exactly a hardship, but it would be nice to have.

-- The pack is very efficient at putting the weight on your hips, but for some reason my hips were a bit sore/tight the first few days of a trip. I'd say it's just me, but I've heard this and read it from other users of this pack.

-- No belt or strap pockets. If that's important to you, you'll have to buy some funky-looking add-ons. I just wear cargo pants/shorts.

As you can see, the above are hardly major complaints. This pack rocks and has a lot of excellent features. I had a hard time choosing between this and the Aether, but there were enough extras to make it worth the added $$ and 1.5 pounds.
