Since I have purchased this bag I have been on well over 40 flights and not once have had to gate check my bag or store it under the plane- not even for the most packed up, tiny plane. Gate crew just see a backpack and don't flinch. That said, I very infrequently fill it to the brim. But even when I do the flexible size and sides allows me to squeeze or position the bag in places that a hard sided wheeled carryon cannot possibly fit (including the small overheads on small planes).
What I also like about this back is that it allows me to carry it hands free. This is why I traveled with a backpacking pack for many years. But those top loaders were a pain to get into. Getting at something on the bottom required the removal of everything else. The double zippers on this bag allow you to get right into the bag just like a standard roller, but with the added benefit of carrying on your shoulder or back.
One last thing. I live in an apartment in San Francisco. Space is a commodity. I have many suitcases. Using the straps this bag will fold down to a small size and fit in just about any carryon we have. It takes up almost no space while holding as much as suitcases that take up twice as much space or more. I could fit the Porter just about anywhere. So when I'm not traveling, my travel bag is not taking up space.Read more ›
So, as you can see, it holds everything that a large duffle or weekend suitcase can, but I have to walk five blocks each way, and my old duffle bag was really slowing me down and limiting what I could carry in my hands. Even though I am plenty strong enough to carry my large, leather weekender bag, it was creating a lot of tension in my upper trap from trying to lean the other way to balance all the weight of the duffle in my carrying hand. The Porter has hidden shoulder straps that come out of the back panel and turns a duffle/weekender bag into a back pack - very cool.Read more ›
First, none of them are comfortable to carry fully loaded as a pack for any distance. They are all absolutely perfect for getting through airports and for reasonable distances around town when catching trains, buses or cabs. Just don't kid yourself into thinking any of these convertible bags will be truly backpack like if you want to wander around places you visit for hours with your bag.
The North Face duffels are really tough and after more than three years of regular use and travel it is still going strong. This bag is technically too big to meet carry-on restrictions although we've yet to have that be an issue in practice. If you pack on the light side, would be fine regardless. If you tend to fill whatever space you have available, I'd be concerned about carry-on size and weight restrictions overseas. Biggest downside to this bag is only having one very small zip pocket for organization. Plan on travel cubes or other means of maintaining some organization if you're going on a trip longer than a few days.
The Patagonia is by far the most suitcase like bag of these four which makes it much easier to pack. It also has the best combination of pockets for small item organization. Really just looks like an oversized shoulder bag when packed. Great quality and the best thought out bag of this group if you like the look.Read more ›
